Chapter 12
by Cretan_Bull14
Is that the end of the fight?
Hank's dead
With blood gushing from his broken nose, Hank falls to the concrete like a sack of potatoes. By this time a small crowd has gathered to watch you. “Good, plenty of witnesses!” You say to yourself as you begin to walk into the bar. However, Tommy notices something wrong and pushes past you. You don’t know what his deal is, but you don’t care. All you want to do is go and get Doe home, so you can celebrate being a father in a more private way. However, your dreams are cut short by two sentences from Tommy.
“Um, John, we’ve got a problem!!! I think Hank’s dead!!!” He says. You don’t even care to turn around.
“Oh shit!!!” Someone shouts from the crowd.
“Someone call 911!!!” Another person shouts from the crowd. Just then, Doe emerges from the door. She looks at you and her lifeless ex-husband lying on the pavement. A look of horror comes over her face.
“What did you do?” She asks you as tears begin to fall from her eyes. She rushes over to Hank and checks his pulse. She looks back at you in sheer panic, like her whole world has just ended. “You…You killed him!!!”
You look down at her in self-pity. You were better than that. You let your anger towards Hank drive you to kill him, and now it has cost you everything. Ten minutes ago, the world was your oyster. You were a father, a lover, and the happiest man alive. Now, you say to yourself, you are just a cold-blooded killer. The flashing of red and blue lights snaps you back to reality. All of a sudden, you see three of your high school buddies coming up to you in Deputy Uniforms. They look at the body lying on the street, and they look at you. They can tell from the look on your face that you are the guilty party. Your buddy, Jimmy Connors, steps over to you. The other deputies move to disperse the crowd.
“John, I think I can guess what happened by the parties involved, but I have to ask anyway. What happened?” He says.
“I was out on a date with Doe. I noticed that Hank was following us, so I came here. He walked up to the door and told Tommy he wanted to talk to me. I agreed and walked out. He swung at me, and I defended myself.” You tell your former running back.
“Did anyone see this incident take place?” He asks.
“Just about everyone in the bar, including Tommy. I’ve really fucked things up, haven’t I Jimmy?” You conclude.
“That’ll be up to the D.A. to decide. But for now, and I REALLY hate to say this…You have the right to remain silent…” The rest of his words are a blur. Your whole world has crumbled because of that piece of shit lying on the concrete in front of your father’s bar. The last thing you remember seeing before being tucked into the back of Jimmy’s police cruiser is Tommy and your father trying to restrain Doe. She is trying to run to you. Swiftly, you are tucked in and taken to the station. You are printed, processed and taken to a cell. Luckily, your hometown doesn’t have much of an issue with crime, so you are there by yourself tonight. You lay out on the bunk in your cell and try to put the evening’s events into perspective. All this does is wear you out mentally and physically. Soon you are asleep.
