Chapter 16
What's step one of your magnificent plan?
Guns and Ammo! ... No, not the magazine.
Of all the planets to make a delivery to, thank Murphy it was a mining planet. Asides from the absolutely booming fuel business, Hephaestus also has a thriving foundry section. However since about 95% of the planet is dedicated to to those two industries, barely anything is actually grown on planet, meaning that almost all of the planet's food and rare materials are traded for with what they dig up. Looking at it from space makes it look like an endless supply train. Surprisingly the companies that discovered Hephaestus were actually rather environmentally minded before they tore up most of the planet. They herded all indigenous lifeforms into specially built protection zones that forbade any drilling or mining and keep the animal population under control by transporting the excess to other worlds to see if they can integrate into the eco-system on those worlds. So far they've only had a few complete successes. Most either couldn't adapt or actually started unbalancing the native food chain enough that the company reclaimed them.
Anyway the point is, asides from fuel, Hephaestus is responsible for about a third of the weaponry that's built in the system and just over half of the ammo used as well. Which means that both are cheap as hell here. And you're going to need more than just your handgun, holdout blaster and Rhian's sniper rifle. A LOT more.
Quickly checking your accounts, you do some working out and come to the grim conclusion that you're going to have to be very careful about balancing what you do with your credits. You've only needed to stop on Hephaestus twice in the past three years, so you've never really had a chance to build up the system of favours, debts and contacts that like you've had on a few other worlds. Luckily Rhian is much more knowledgeable when it comes to this place and quickly leads you to a very shady looking weapons foundry. The place is blisteringly hot and you're dripping sweat within seconds. Within seconds of entering, a massive Garilian comes stomping over to you, wiping massive amounts of grease and oil off with a ragged cloth. As she comes closer, you can see huge chunks of her skin are covered in burns, scar tissue and acid streaks. Once she's reasonably cleaned off, the Garilian offers you a hand "Welcome to Gunners Paradise. I'm Jascoba. You can call me Jas."
Taking her hand, you try to keep from wincing as you feel the bones in your hand starting to crack a little "I'm looking for some heavy weaponry. Light, powerful and able to throw a lot of bullets very quickly and very often." She nods and gets a thoughtful look in her eyes "I've got some ideas..."
Jas quickly leads you out of the baking heat into a room set up like an armory with a large metal table in the center of the room and paper targets against the far wall. She pauses to give you a once over glance, and then grabs three guns off the walls. Carrying them to the table, she lays them out flat and gestures you to come close and take a look.
"Okay to start off with, we have a Guillotine Scattergun" She holds up what looks like a sawed-off shotgun on steroids "This baby started off with two shots before it needed to be reloaded, a recoil that felt like a shuttle crashed into you and a kill range of about twenty-five feet..." She spins around and aims at the paper targets, blasting off three quick shots, shredding the target completely "I installed a drum magazine on the underside, giving you sixteen more shots, the additional weight stops most of the recoil and I've lengthened the barrel slightly, so the range is about forty-five feet now. Also..." She withdraws a shell from her pocket and tosses it to you. Catching it, you hold it up to the light and look at it closely. It looks like it contains soap carvings as well as the usual lead shot. Weirdly it also looks like it contains liquid as well "Don't shake that around much. I added white phosphorus and napalm to the mix" Instantly you stop moving your hand "Hit someone with one of these and if they're not wearing specialist gear and well... I hope you like your meat like charcoal." Gingerly you put the shell on the table. And then take a step away just for good measure.
Turning to the next piece on the table, she holds it up. It looks a little like a shrunken submachine gun "This little thing is the Spitfire. It barely weighs anything, doesn't make a noise that you can hear beyond three feet, has virtually no recoil even at full speed and can fire at 720 RPM" She aims at another of the paper targets, pulling the trigger and ends up carving the target out of the paper completely and then turns back to you with a wicked grin "I also designed the ammo block to come apart like it's being sliced with superfine mesh. Fire this at someone and you're not firing to put a hole in them. You're firing to shred them into pieces."
She places it back on the table and picks up the final gun. A massive machine gun with a shield installed on the barrel. You're about to ask how in the hell she expects you to carry it when instead, she throws it at you. Instinctively you lift your hands up to catch it; desperately trying to brace yourself for the weight. Instead you're more caught off guard when you do catch it and don't fall to the floor immediately "And that is my pride and joy. My magnum opus as you Terrans say. I call it the Reaper. And it fires... these" She pulls a bullet out and shows it to you. Normally a bullet is just a bullet to you, but this seems like something a bit more lethal "Something this dangerous needed the bullets to match. This specimen is an armour piercing high explosive. It'll destroy cover, open doors and rip bloody chunks out of people."
You put the Reaper back on the table and she spreads her arms out gesturing to the guns "So what'll it be?"
Decisions, Decisions! What'll it be? The brute and speed approach of the Scattergun? The more stealthy path of the Spitfire? Or the the overwhelming devastation of the Reaper?
