Chapter 10 by wicker wicker

So how do your studies go?

Great!

As your studies advance, so does your friendship with David. He tutors many of the undergrads at the Sigma Delta fraternity, so he gets invited to their parties and invites you along a few times. The Sigma Deltas always have their sister sorority the Delta Gammas over, and you've had a couple drunken make outs. You also manage to stay away from Tawny's badside by keeping your mouth shut and doing whatever she says. She collects data on another **** meant to treat Adult Attention Hyperactivity Disorder.

Halfway into the semester, David summons you into Dr Zhang's office. He has a worried look on his face.

Dr Zhang sits rather informally at his desk, with his feet resting on the red-oak top, blue necktie barely hanging onto his opened collar. He is probably the most care-free, nonchalant member on the faculty, which might be a consequence of his anomalous age. A boy genius, he graduated high school as valedictorian at 15, earned his masters degree in psychology at 20, became an MD at 25, got his PhD two years later, and now enjoys considerable clout in both his department as well as the Neuropsychiatric Institute. He is still only 29. He's a thin, half-Chinese-half-white, with a whispy mustache and unkempt black hair. He looks like he should me managing a Radio Shack rather than working on ground-breaking psychotropic ****.

"First of all," Dr Zhang begins, speaking specifically to you, "I know that I haven't been much of a mentor for you, in the very short time that you've been here.

"But as you both know," he glances over at David sitting next to you, "this lab has put in a lot of time and effort into Mesmerol, a **** which could benefit millions."

David nods agreeably and utters, "Word."

Dr Zhang sighs and continues, "However, we have recently come under fire from the ethics committee, due to some of the informal testing of non-psychiatric patients, meaning, patients with no mental health problems.

"It was my belief that such extracurricular study would be beneficial to everyone involved, but the committee does not seem to think so. Consequently, our permission to use human subjects at the NPI has been suspended until it can be reevaluated."

Dr Zhang turns to you, staring intently and wearing the most serious face that you have ever seen on him. "I've spent the last few months trying to get this whole thing smoothed out, and I have no doubt that it will be soon enough," he explains, "but until then, I see no reason to waste our time twiddling our thumbs when meaningful research can be done, don't you agree?"

You nod-- politely, if not to agree.

"David is excellent at reading people," the doctor says, "so I know I can trust you. Would you be willing to put your usual work on hold for awhile to assist David in doing clinical trials until we have our license back?"

What do you think?
