Chapter 17 by MidbossMan MidbossMan

For now, how will you thwart Adder Adjutant's escape?

Grab the rope along with the Adjutant

You had no tools perfectly suited to take down the Adjutant in this situation, but the one thing you still had was perseverance, one of your most important weapons as an agent. That might sound cliché, but it had gotten you through scrape after impossible scrape. The willingness not to give up in the face of impossible odds, be that handling your supernaturally gifted team of spies or enemies of their caliber, was essential in this role and so unlikely in an agent, it nearly qualified you as a super spy yourself. You stretched your limits once more, grabbing hold of the helicopter's rope with both hands and dangling off the end as it took into the sky. Your position didn't look nearly as in control as hers did and it was hard to imagine what you would accomplish like this.

But still you tried. The Adjutant watched with anger in her eyes as you struggled your way up the rope, reaching one hand up past the other in sequence until you'd nearly caught up to her. "What a fool! But I suppose it's only fitting that a cockroach like you meets their end upon the heel of my boot," she scoffed, then thrust her boot downward. It connected powerfully with your face, ringing your bell and causing you to see stars. Not a graceful way for a secret agent scene to play out, but again... perseverance. You climbed yet higher, now grabbing one hand around their leg. It was a dangerous proposition; this would make it easier for her to shake you off, theoretically, but it could lead to her losing balance and plummeting down with you.

"You maniac! Realize your position already," the Adjutant growled, then set to kicking your hand with their other boot.

Gritting your teeth in pain, you proceeded, wrapping fingers into their belt and propelling yourself up so that, ridiculously, your face was buried in their upper thighs. You felt the Adjutant's slender, toned body beneath the suit, but you could take little pleasure in it, knowing she was not only one of the worst terrorists in the world, but also, abusive and belittling in regards to you specifically.

The situation was almost laughable. As you struggled to pull yourself further up the Adjutant's figure, you ended up grabbing hands to her chest, feeling her practically non-existent swells beneath it. Rather than complain, she just pummeled you harder in an a slapstick fashion, beating you with one fist and elbow once you left the range where her feet would work. "Pathetic scum! I can't imagine what's going on in that head of yours! Is that all you wanted here at the end? To touch a woman's boobs?!" she berated you, while hammering your bleeding nose with her elbow. It could be a cute gesture, if it wasn't for the absolute, honed force behind each of those strikes.

Despite her resistance, you reached your real goal: you clasped your hands around hers.

"We'll both fall! You idiot! You're going to kill us both!"

You were prepared for that possibility. There could be no more important mission for an agent of the Goodbye Girls than stopping Adder Adjutant. If that meant the death of another Goodbye Girl's handler, it was worth the cost. With great effort, you wrenched your fingers around hers and began squeezing. A man's power against a woman's should have made this simple, but you were certain she had gone through at least a bit of Adder's genetic alteration for super soldiers. This was no ordinary woman you were dealing with, even if she didn't have Au Revoir's size.

After what felt like an eternity of squeezing her hands while being beaten blue by her elbows, you finally achieved your goal, causing her to release her grip. You held your arms around her waist as the two of you fell together...

It seemed like it was all over; the trajectory the helicopter's path had taken you on was set to deposit you not back onto the deck, but instead, just over the side of the ship. Either you'd hit the water painfully and submerge deep, or worse, you'd hit some part of the side of the ship. Your only solace was that Adder Adjutant would probably also be killed in the fall... a shame, considering the information you hoped to extract, but a blessing for the world at large, surely.

You felt something lurch beneath you as you reached the railing. The impact knocked the wind out of you, but somehow, you hadn't died... it seemed like the points of impact were two strong bars, just beneath your shoulders and hips. Soon enough, you identified the source: Au Revoir had reached out to grab you, stopping you from plummeting to your doom.

While you were still figuring that out, being dragged back aboard the deck, Vaarvel reached around you to grab the Adjutant and catch her in one of her signature choke-holds. Au Revoir wiped sweat from her forehead while tending to you, inspecting your exposed back for injuries. "Yikes, my friend! There is going to be significant bruising in your future. But I am impressed that you did not let go of the Adjutant! I always suspected you were the clingy type, he he." You weren't in the mood for jokes... you felt like you could barely move after all of that.

Once the Adjutant's resistance was brought to an end, the two switched partners: Au Revoir threw the unconscious Adder Adjutant over one shoulder, while Vaarvel helped you stumble, addled and dazed, towards the Gambit for extraction. Nora followed alongside your group, carrying the assault rifles one of the guards had been using, though you hoped she wouldn't have to use it. You only had a small window of opportunity with which to get in before the chopper or some other Adder agent made the interception. If there'd been any fewer or less skilled agents with you, you'd never have made it...

Once again, you squeaked through a mission by the narrowest of margins, though given the results, you had no room to complain about the path you took to get there.

What's next?
