Chapter 23 by Indirect Indirect

What to do for a wedding?

Grab some witnesses and get to the church

Using the excuse that the king might not wait you tell Doe and Linne to dress up and get ready while you send word to some nobles who can act as witnesses.

Linne's jaw drops and her tail puffs up. "You mean today?"

"Oh yes. The sooner the better," you tell her with a smile.

"Great," Doe says, stretching, "I'd rather get it done rather than spend months talking about bouquets and seating arrangements."

Now that's a rare opinion from a minor noblewoman. And a truly refreshing one.

"Oh, oh boy," Linne says, prancing back and forth. "I'll... oh my, I'll get our good dresses."

"Hold on," you tell her. Still, it's a good thing you wrapped your arms around her waist because Linne looks like she was about to shoot up the stairs like lightning. "Why don't you both go into the small workshop. I laid out some things you will need there." You pull a key from your pocket and hold it out.

Now Doe is looking curious. She takes the key and slithers elegantly toward the workshop door, commenting, "You've been thinking about this for a while, haven't you?"

"I hope you're not mad, but once I realized this was the best way and that we wouldn't have much time..."

She opens the door and what's inside draws a sharp gasp from Linne. Doe stops in her tracks, looking at what you've secretly assembled.

"If these will fit..."

"They'll fit. I had them adjusted based on the first dresses you both wore." Inside the workshop are the two lovely white wedding dresses you've had constructed in secret. Pure, silky, decorated with strings of pearl for one and with moonstones for the other. And against the wall a large dresser with several other useful things, like elbow length white silk gloves, several pairs of sparkling earrings, four different necklaces to choose from, some hair bands, combs and, of course, a huge mirror with which to examine themselves.

Even Doe is speechless. Finally she visibly clears her throat and says, "This is really happening. Today. Now. I... don't think it had sunk in yet."

As for Linne she's stuck rigidly in place, like a cat that's suddenly seen a squirrel through a window.

"Isn't it bad luck to see the dress before the wedding?" Linne finally manages, in a whisper.

You rub her lower back, scratching through the gray fur until she relaxes a little. "We're already breaking the rule about having one man and one woman, I don't think a little thing like seeing you in your dresses is going to be a problem." Then you rub your cheek against hers and add, "Besides, I'm not letting you two out of my sight until I've put wedding rings on you. Oh, which reminds me," you pull out a pair of small, identical wooden boxes.

That gets Doe to come back from the doorway. It also makes Linne start squeaking quietly, like she can't figure out how to make sounds properly at the moment.

"Linne, Doe, would you both do me the honor of becoming my wives?" With that you pop open both boxes and turn them toward your girls. Doe is not the romantic type, but even so when you go down on your knee and place a small diamond studded ring on her finger she doesn't know what to do. She looks like she wants to jump for joy, but she's also completely embarrassed and fighting back a blush. Not entirely successfully.

She does manage to say, "Yes, of course." Then she mutters that the ring is just a formality anyway - she already agreed to marry you this morning. Then she turns away and tries to hide her face. Finally she looks back over her shoulder and says, "Thank you," in a very heartfelt tone before turning away again to hide her tears of joy.

As for Linne, when you do the same to her she freezes again. As the ring goes on her finger her eyes roll back in her head and she passes out, slumping to the floor. When she wakes, with her head in your lap and Doe looking down at her, worried, she asks, "What happened?"

You point at the ring and she nearly goes out again.

Then she just starts laughing and hugging you and starts crying out, "Yes, yes, yes!" in a way that any passers by would probably take as the end of a very successful romp in the bedroom.

Do you get hitched without a hitch?
