What's next?

Go with Kaylee

You let Simon explain that he has to take care of his sister. After Kaylee's eyes turn to you, you nod. "Sure, why not?"
She smiles happily and you join her, the Shepard and Jayne, leaving a sad Simon and likely a sadder River behind.

The fair, splayed out in a field in front of a large factory, is a wonderland of lights, tents and games. Quickly, your group splits up a bit, exploring all the booths and activities. Jayne is clearly willing to win something for himself, while you and Book act more gentlemanly and try a few games for the bubbly mechanic. You buy her some coiled-shaped cotton candy, the Shepard tries to guess a fat woman's weight, but fails. After you all walk away laughing, Kaylee giggles. "I actually thought it was quite sweet to drop fifty pounds."
Book smiles. "Seemed a wise choice."
"She was an awfully big lady", Kaylee states and spins around happily. "Don't you just love a fair?"
You exchange a smiling look with the chuckling Shepard. "Have you always been this happy?", he asks.
"From the day I was born’d", Kaylee answers. "Seems like on all the choices, happy just belonged to me."
You pass Jayne who is failing to hit a yellow balloon with darts. "Gorramn it!", he exclaims, not taking notice of you.

A loud voice draws your attention. A guy, dressed in alliance uniforms, clearly someone of importance, holds a speech. "Thanks to the good Alliance people of Verbena, our gear shift factory is opening ten days ahead of schedule", he announces under cheers from the crowd. As you turn your head again, you notice that Kaylee doesn't care at all and instead watches some guy with color-changing tattoos.
"Verbena was scarcely surviving, barely more than a piece of barren rock", the speaker continues, forcing you to control your urge to punch him. Governments, always believing that they're solving problems, you think angrily.
"But now with the Alliance factory opening you and your families will be able to lead full and satisfying lives."
You almost want to puke hearing the shameless propaganda. You turn around, deciding you rather want to watch a pretty girl having fun than this silly event, when the air explodes.

You're knocked to the ground by a massive shock wave. Noise, screams, flying debris. After a few seconds of instinctive self-protection, you lift your head and try to analyze the situation. Your ears are buzzing, people are crying, screaming, bleeding. Parents desperately hunt for their children among the smoke and wreckage. Your clothes are dirty with ash. You look around, quickly finding the Shepard in the process of getting up. "Shepherd, you're alright?", you ask.
He nods wordlessly and looks around. "Kaylee?"
She's not here. You're not sure whether she was with you right before the explosion, but you're still worried. Slowly, the people still standing around you start gathering themselves and helping the injured. A tent is quickly converted into a triage center and you join Book in helping to carry people inside. Soon, Mal appears and joins in as well. "Kaylee was probably with us", you start worriedly, but he immediately responds. "She's safe. Everyone is."
You breathe a sigh of relief. After you set up the man you're carrying on a table, the Captain says "We need to be leavin’."
Book shakes his head. "There's work to be done here."
The Captain is clearly worried. "In case you’ve forgotten, Shepherd, we’ve got two Alliance fugitives on our ship."
And one here, you add in your head. But Book points behind Mal. "Afraid not anymore."
The Captain and you both turn around. Simon rushes inside carrying his medical bag. He moves over to a groaning man, starts shouting orders as he examines the man. "Son of...", Mal starts.
Zoe comes inside the tent. "Sir?"
"Looks like we’re stayin’ a bit", he answers with a nod towards the Doctor.
"Good", Book says, "we can use the help."
