"Nina, wait up!"

You don't turn around as Toby sprints to catch up to you. He tries to take your hand, but you shake him off, deciding to stay mad at him for a little longer. Still, a hint of a smile plays across your lips. You still got it.

"So, uh, where are we going?" he asks.

You gesture at the corridor in front of you. There are doors lining the walls at irregular and infrequent intervals. Each one has a console next to it, about waist-high on you but torso-height on a Keltraxan. You examine the nearest one: you can make out an icon that will unlock the door, but you can't read the Keltraxans' script. You have no idea what might be on the other side.

"What do you think?" you ask, turning to Toby. "Should we open one?"

He frowns. "What if it's another habitat? What if it leads to some kind of creature, and it sees us as food. Or maybe the atmosphere isn't even breathable."

All good points. You furrow your brow in thought. This jailbreak is not going to be easy. "All right, we don't open any doors just yet. Let's see where this hallway leads."

The two of you pad along the spongy surface. Despite feeling slimy to your bare feet, it doesn't leave any residue on you. At junctions, throbbing, veiny-looking clusters of vines drape across the upper corners of the passages, like grossly enlarged spider-webs. What kind of horror show is this place?

You hear voices from up ahead. They are conversing, casually it seems, so they probably don't know that two of their star attractions are wandering around here. But in moments they'll be upon you.

Toby hears them too. Saying nothing, he taps you on the shoulder, gestures. You see that you could hide behind an outgrowth from the "wall". He pantomimes jumping out, surprising them. From what little you saw of the Keltraxans when you first arrived, you know they are a diminutive species, likely weaker than humans, at least physically. The two of you might be able to overpower them.

On the other hand, you don't know there is just two of them. It might be a whole squad. Or they might be equipped with **** rays or whatever. Attacking could be foolhardy. But the only alternative would be to try one of those unknown doors.
