Chapter 8

What do you do?
Go to her side.
Knowing how bad this must be for her, you hop out of bed and hurry across the room to her side. You can see her in the dark now and she is visably shaking. Her wide, fearful eyes turn to you. She tries her best to mask her fear with indifference, but you can still see the look in her eyes.
"It's okay." You say softly. "I'm right here." She shoots you an annoyed glance.
"I'm not a kid." She huffs, trying to sound tough. Instead, her voice comes out unsteady and on edge.
"I know." You insist. "I'm just saying, you don't need to be afraid."
"I'm not afraid!" She hisses. "I just hate storms, that's all. They irk me." She shakes her head. "They don't scare me."
Another flash of lightning lights up the room and a clash of thunder follows within a second. Melody shrieks involuntarily. You could almost laugh if you didn't feel so sorry for her.
"Oh fuck..." She groans. "The lightning and thunder are so close together. The storm's practically right over us..." You reach out with your hand to touch hers and she suddenly grabs your hand. Her scared eyes meet yours and you can see her irises dance with both fear and shame. "Don't leave." She pleads. "Could you...could you stay here with me, please?" You know this is hard for her to say; she hates appearing weak, especially in front of you, and she really dislikes asking for help. "I'll feel...safer if someone sleeps next to me."
Do you share a bed with her to help ease her fears?
