Chapter 17 by joplaya
Risk going East? Explore the West? Try somehing else?
Go West
An uneasy shudder runs through your body and your lips curl back in disgust as you remember Eddie and his words about the Colonel “We should go to the western bridge” you state firmly, “Oh yeah, Why’s that?” sneers Walter, you try to ignore the way his eyes are focused on your tits rather than on your face as you patiently explain your reasoning.
“Well, we already know that there are armed men traveling in groups to the east, Walter, and we know they are unfriendly” here, you gesture off to the west “True, there may be the same type of thing to the west but we don’t know that; and even if there is, the fact that no one knows about them implies they might be less aggressive and remain hidden, we may even be able to negotiate or barter for our passage”
Walters face flushes a dark reddish hue as Regina nods slowly “She’s right; we go west to the bridge” “Good thinking, girl” Conrad murmured shooting you an approving smile, you feel a wave of heat race through you at his smile what the hell is wrong with me you think, shocked at the sudden surge of desire for someone you should despise; distracted by your thoughts, you don’t see the hate filled glare Walter directs at your back as the four of you start walking.
It is an uncomfortably eerie sensation moving through the empty city streets, all around you where once there had been a city teeming with life and full of vibrant colours and the constant roar of traffic, voices and the occasional siren; now there are only abandoned cars, empty buildings and deserted, all that could be heard was the four of you walking and the thin whistle of a light wind. You can feel a vague sense of melancholy settling on your shoulders as you head deeper into the empty city, the three others seem to feel the same way as there is little conversation along the way.
The bridge turns out to be only a few miles walk from the apartment; this comes as something of a relief to you as, whether the cause was your month long slumber or the pregnancy itself you had found yourself having to rest frequently, each time drawing a withering look from Walter. Now, though the four of you were crouched a few hundred meters from the bridge, studying it through a cheap pair of child’s binoculars Regina had produced from her own pack.
Although the slow moving river was quite wide, perhaps a half kilometer across, the bridge itself was a rather small and narrow thing, only two lanes across and with some kind of thick, braided metal cables serving as the barricades for the cars and the railings for the pedestrian walkways tacked onto the sides.
“That thing offers no damned cover at all” Conrad had muttered upon seeing it and you were inclined to agree with him, the metal cables would be impossible to take cover behind and there were only a few stalled cars on the bridge, far too few to hide between for the entire length of the bridge.
“He’s right” Walter says coldly, handing the binoculars back to Regina “If there is anyone looking, they would see us pretty easily on that thing”, he shoots a sneer at both you and her “Coming this way was a waste of time; we should go back and try the other bridge”
“We don’t know that there is anyone is looking” you point out coldly, trying to ignore the warm flutter in your stomach as Regina smiled at you approvingly.
“We don’t know there isn’t either!” he spat back, eyes narrowed behind his thick glasses.
“Enough, all of you” Conrad rumbled as he stood up “I will go across here on my own first, Regina, you watch me with the binoculars and once I am safely across the three of you will cross in a group” He turns away from you and without another word heads directly for the bridge, drawing a large revolver from the small of his back and cocking it as he walks forward.
As Conrad made his way towards the bridge you could feel your heart quicken in your chest, you actually felt worried about him! tearing your eyes off of him you looked back at the others. Regina had the same worried, nervous look on her face that you suspect was on yours and as for Walter, well Walter was looking at you or more precisely was looking at your tits. He shoots you a lecherous grin when he sees you eyes on him, another traitorous ripple of desire races through you as he leers your way.
What happens to Conrad? What about you and the others?
