Chapter 10 by Manbear Manbear

How do you deal with this distraught crew member?

Give her time

As nice as it felt to have Smith pinned under you like this and as much as you wanted to take advantage of your position, it would not only be wrong on at least four moral and legal levels that you could think of off the top of your head, it would also be incredibly stupid. The young ensign has just had to deal with the shock of losing her childhood friend and lover, as well as finding herself crash landed on a hostile planet - attacking her would hardly lead to the kind of working relationship you needed if you were going to get off this lush jungle planet.

Rolling off Smith you step far enough away that if she decides to resume her attack you'll be ready for her. The fight in the engineer has clearly been suppressed if not the underlying anger and distrust as she climbs slowly to her feet and stares at you defiantly through her tears.

"Take some time Smith," you tell her in what you hope is a calming voice of authority, "I know how hard this must be for you. When you are ready to work, I'll be either out here setting up some kind of perimeter or in engineering seeing how bad this is going to be." She nodded numbly and climbed back up the accommodation ladder to the main airlock. In spite of your intentions to be a decent commander, you cannot help but admire the firmness of the petite blonde's ass as she climbed up the side of the listing ship.

"Damn." You mutter aloud as you turn your attention to the small island you used as a landing zone. There was still a chance Smith would warm up to you, and you did have the Breeding License tucked away in your breast pocket - although how much weight that UTF document would hold in this type of situation remained to be seen.

In spite of your best efforts, the Gorgon had come in hot and there is a trail of destruction for several hundred meters behind the sleek corvette. The leafy tops of dozens of great trees were snapped off like broken straws and for the last fifty meters a gash in the dark soil had been gouged by the belly of the Gorgon as she plowed her way to a stop.

From this, one of the highest points on the low lying island you can see a much larger island to the North and in the distance several smaller ones on the horizon scattered in almost every other direction. Things could be worse, but the fact of the matter was you were in a bad situation.

Less than a week into your first command you had your ship torpedoed in a losing battle, lost one of your crew members, antagonized the other, and were marooned on this alien planet for Stars knew how long.

What is your first order of business?
