Ghosts of Twilight
Shadow gently laid Rouge on the soft bed in the private room, his crimson eyes lingering on her peaceful face. The memory of their shared moment still hummed between them, leaving him on edge even in the quiet. Moonlight filtered through the curtains, casting silver streaks across the sheets. He sat beside her, ever watchful, his body coiled like a spring.
Rouge stirred in her sleep, a soft whisper escaping her lips. “Mom’s here? Where? I’ve missed her so much!” The words struck Shadow like a sudden chill. Rouge never spoke of her family. Despite himself, he couldn’t deny the curiosity that had always lingered about the woman who raised such a fierce, independent bat.
A faint, sweet aroma suddenly filled the room, wrapping around him like invisible silk. It smelled of night-blooming flowers and something warmer, almost maternal. Shadow fought the drowsiness that crept in, his mind screaming to stay alert. But the scent was too potent, too soothing. His vision blurred, and he felt himself falling forward. Gentle hands caught him before darkness swallowed him whole.
When he opened his eyes, cold metal met his touch. He rose slowly, recognizing the familiar hum of technology and the echo of distant voices. “The Ark,” he murmured, a sigh escaping him. “Will this actually be a good dream for once?”
He pushed open a door and paused. This was his and Maria’s spot—the place where he had discarded his past, where his friends had mourned his supposed **** as Eggman carried him away. Maria’s favorite view of Earth stretched before him, the very spot where she had died. The stars glittered beyond the glass like scattered diamonds.
Shadow walked to the window, gazing at the blue planet below. “It’s so quiet this time,” he whispered. “Unusual for my dreams here.”
A voice broke the silence behind him. “Well, ‘dream’ is a loose term in the Love Ruby.”
Shadow turned. Standing there was a bat, tall and elegant like Rouge, with the same curvaceous figure and soft white fur that glowed faintly under the lights. But her face held the wisdom of age, lined with subtle laugh lines around her eyes. Those eyes were a deep emerald, sharp and knowing, framed by long lashes. Her lipstick was a familiar bold shade of crimson, and she wore a sleek black catsuit that hugged her form, complete with matching gloves and a plunging neckline that revealed generous cleavage. Her wings folded neatly behind her, and a faint scent of jasmine clung to her.
“You really are handsome,” she said with a warm smile. “Before you ask, I’m Noir the Bat—Rouge’s mother.”
Shadow blinked in surprise.
“To answer your unspoken question,” she continued, “the veil between life and **** is as thin as paper here in the Love Ruby. Two dead lion mobians rule this place, after all.” She gestured toward the window. “Though I bet I wasn’t what you were expecting.”
Shadow looked back at Earth, now bathed in the glow of a full aurora borealis. “Given where we are, I suppose I wasn’t.” He paused, memories surfacing. “This was Maria’s favorite view. She used to get so excited, I’d have to remind her that her condition was in remission, not cured. She worked herself up so much.”
“I’ve never heard Rouge talk much about her family,” he admitted.
Noir sat beside him, her gaze following his to the stunning vista. “I didn’t give her much to talk about,” she said softly. “Your friend is right—it is a hell of a view.”
Shadow glanced at her. Noir sighed. “Rouge probably avoids talking to me because of what happened. I don’t like reliving it either.” She rubbed her temple. “But I’ve wanted to meet you for a while, Shadow. This place has its problems, but talking with you and Rouge in your dreams is a benefit.”
Shadow opened his mouth, but Noir continued. “If you’re wondering, Maria is with Rouge right now. We decided to split up—she talks to Rouge, I talk to you. She said we’d remind you too much of the past, and she doesn’t want to see you hurt again.”
Shadow chuckled. “Sounds like Maria, always putting others first.”
“I’m not much for talking about my emotions,” he added.
“Neither is Rouge,” Noir replied with a smirk. “You’re in good company. Neither am I, but I promised to help, so here I am.” She turned to him, curiosity in her eyes. “Tell me honestly—what do you like about Rouge? You can admit you’re at least friends, no matter how stubborn you are.”
Shadow crossed his arms, staring at Earth. After a long silence, he closed his eyes. “She’s one of the few people I can trust. Scratch that—she’s the only one I trust with anything. I can lower my guard around her, loosen the walls just a bit. It’s not much, but it’s enough. She may be a thief, but when push comes to shove, she’ll be there. I admire her brilliant mind, her cunning, her top-notch hacking. Her legs can kick boulders, and her agility is impressive.”
“You’re holding out on me,” Noir teased, noticing his blush. “I promise I won’t tell.”
Shadow sighed. “I don’t know if it’s the Ruby’s effect, but I’m noticing her undeniable beauty more lately. She’s been more comforting. I wonder if it’s the Ruby or something more.” He leaned against the window. “I really like her smile, her cute fangs… there’s so much more, but I’m not ready to admit it.”
Noir placed a gentle hand on his head, motherly. “Because you’re afraid that if you move on or love someone else, you’ll set yourself up for pain. Because you still only hear…”
A sudden gunshot interrupted her. Shadow closed his eyes, a tear falling. Noir wiped it away. “Rouge isn’t Maria, you know that.”
Shadow nodded. “I know. But I’m ageless. If I don’t set myself up for hurt now, it’ll happen later. No matter what, I’ll be in nothing but pain. I’ll accept friends—no one can live alone—but if I accept love, it’ll just be another gunshot to the head.”
Noir flicked him on the head. “That’s the biggest load of crap I’ve ever heard.” She flicked him again, but Shadow didn’t retaliate, respecting that she was Rouge’s mother. “A life without love is just a life without living.”
She sighed. “Do you know my second biggest regret, besides getting myself killed when I had Rouge to look after? I don’t know Rouge’s father. It was just a fling in a bathroom stall with some handsome bat guy—the condom broke.” Shadow’s eyes widened. “I never knew the man. I wanted to find him so badly, to let him meet his child. But I was too scared, and before I found the courage, I died.”
Tears streaked down Noir’s face. Shadow wiped them away, returning the kindness she had shown him. She took a deep breath. “I regret those two things, but I didn’t let them define me. The time I had with Rouge—I wouldn’t trade those ten years for anything.” She looked at Earth. “A life without love isn’t worth living, Shadow. You may be eternal, but you can still love. Otherwise, why live at all?”
Shadow grew quiet, staring at the view. “Rouge would love this—the Aurora Borealis is like Earth’s gemstone, only the stars can have.”
He looked back, but Noir was gone. “A life without love… isn’t worth living,” he whispered.
He closed his eyes, stirring on the floor. Slowly standing, he saw Rouge sitting up, watching him with a quiet expression.
“Your mother is just as blunt as you are,” he said.
“Maria says hi,” Rouge replied, scooting over. “That was… a lot. Want to lay next to me tonight?”
Shadow laid down without hesitation. She wrapped her arms around him. “She’s just as wonderful as you described.”
“Your mother is very convincing,” Shadow said, wrapping his arms around her and relaxing. He drifted off, a massive weight lifting from his shoulders. Just for the night, he would hold her and cherish every second.
