Chapter 17 by cphi cphi

What's next?

Getting the work done.

{if DavidBrianCall = 1
}Beth and David sat slouched on Terry's couch for a little bit, processing their infidelities before reality started to creep back in.
"We should get back to work..." David mused.
"Yeah, you're probably right." Beth was dubious that she would be able to seriously concentrate on work after what just happened. Despite this, they dressed and cleaned themselves up as best they could in the office bathroom before getting back to business, though many a blush and giggle was had between them as they tried to return to some kind of professional decorum.
Eventually, they finished up their work, and prepared to head home. David received a text that twisted his mouth into anger. Apparently, Kim was going to stay at the hotel for the night. "Because she doesn't want to smell 'slut' on me when I get home."
"Well, I guess I can't be as pissed about that now, huh?" Beth chuckled.
"Yeah."
"I'm sorry. We shouldn't have..." she started, but David stopped her.
"I had fun. I know you did too. Let's just... leave it at that for now."
"Sure."
They parted ways with a hug, and Beth drove home, trying very hard to swallow any guilt or shame before she arrived.

}Beth excused herself while David called his wife. She took her clothes into the bathroom to freshen up and dress. She had a little trouble looking at herself in the mirror. When she returned, David was hanging up.
"So?"
"I'm going to head to the Sheraton, so you should head home." Beth didn't quite understand the feeling of jealousy she had no right to feel at that moment.
"What about...?"
"I'll finish up my prep tomorrow. Thanks for your help. And... you know..." he blushed.
"You're welcome, and you're very welcome." She sighed.
They parted with a hug, and on her way to the car, Beth's phone rang. It was Brian.

Hey, baby!" she answered. Shit. I didn't call him.
"Hey, I just got home from the event. We wrapped early. Where are you? Kyle said you haven't been home yet."
"Wait... Kyle? Your brother? He's at the house?"
"Yeah... shit I guess I forgot to tell you. He got in today, so he's here."
"That's great." She grabbed the door handle of her car and climbed inside. "I'm sorry, I stayed late to help David. He needs to prep for a big case that's appearing in court on Monday." She turned the car over. "I thought I'd be home before you, so I guess I just forgot to text you."
"Oh, that's fine. I was just..."
"Aw... you were worried about me?" she grimaced with guilt.
"Maybe..."
"Well, I'm in the car now, I'll see you guys in a bit."
"Ok, love you."
Beth tried not to sound ill. "Yeah. Love you too." {else

}After a few seconds which seemed to stretch forever, David released her, and began to stutter. "I'm--I'm sorry."
"It's okay, I'm alright." Beth felt her cheeks flush. She tried to push away the disappointment she felt when his hands left her body. Get a grip on yourself, girl.

They finished up in a reasonable amount of time, given the amount of work. Beth shook David's hand and headed out, resisting the urge to glance back and see if he was watching her leave. {else
}Beth and David finished their drinks and got back to work. Beth felt warm and fuzzy, and she wasn't sure how much was the bourbon and how much was the pleasant feeling of getting to be a sounding board.
They finished up their work relatively quickly after their bourbon break, and Beth surprised herself by giving David a big hug before they parted ways, which he returned without hesitation.

On the way to her car, she got a call from Brian.

"Hey, baby!" she answered. Shit. I didn't call him.

When Beth arrived at home, Brian was in shorts and a t-shirt, but he didn't appear to have showered yet, and when she hugged him he smelled faintly of cologne, perfume, and cigar smoke. She didn't mind too much though, and she hoped that he wasn't suspicious of her lingering hug and passionate kiss.
Kyle Jackson, Corporal, U.S. Army (Ret.) introduced himself. He was in jeans and a tight green t-shirt, and despite his extended hand, she gave him a hug instead. They enjoyed a late dinner, ordering pizza and drinking beer while Kyle and Beth got acquainted. Freshly discharged, he had taken a military transport from Damascus to Tel Aviv, and flown from Tel Aviv to JFK. After a quick 12 hour layover in Manhattan, during which Kyle had crashed with a friend in Brooklyn, he had gotten on a plane to LAX that had gotten in at around noon. He was jet lagged, though the 12 hours spent on the east coast helped a little bit. He would be looking for a job, and an apartment, but Brian was quick to assure him that he could stay with them for a while without a problem.
Beth began to notice Brian's eagerness to show himself as hospitable to his brother, and seemed to be bending over backward to make Kyle feel welcome and loved. Beth would have chalked it up to just being a proud big brother, if it hadn't been for the look that Kyle had given Brian after a particular bout of gushing praise and pride, which had caused Brian to subside into "yeah"'s and "so, anyway..."s. Something weird was going on there.
Eventually, jet lag caught up to Kyle. Beth and Brian headed upstairs to let him sleep.
