Getting into orbit & sampling the situation

A few days of travel time ticked by, before the hybrid's ship entered orbit above the moon. From above, everything seemed peaceful: it was merely a small moon, with an atmosphere maintained by artificial devices, covered in greenery that was only broken by a single complex of buildings. With everything seeming fine from space, Cynand pressed a few buttons on the console. His ship came with a drone, which included, among other functions, surveillance. He'd never actually worked out how to pilot it or direct it, so all he could do was tell it to fly down and record the situation, and hope that it would manage the job by itself. He dipped into the upper atmosphere for a moment and let the drone out, before flying back and bringing up footage from the drone.

For a few minutes, he say staring at the black screen, before the drone was in position above the manor and able to extend its sensors. General scans of the area returned a few unusual energy readings that its civilian-grade sensors were unable to interpret. Diving in and flitting around the buildings themselves, scanning through the windows, turned up a lot of blood splatter, but no corpses. Whoever killed the residents had also removed the bodies.

The drone floated back up and sat watching the manor. Minutes ticked by, before finally something moved, and the camera zoomed in on it...
