Chapter 166

What's next?
Finally Fighting. Flames count.
You couldn't fly, nor could you wait to get Wonder Woman to help.
Ok... Maybe you could've been more patient...
But you already made up your mind to help the victims of a raging inferno, from what J'onn described. You had begun rowing when it dawned on you that your nanobots had assimilated Mari's DNA, so if you could punch a punching bag or Wildcat that hard and fast, then you should be able to swim or run that fast, too. Feeling like an idiot, you put the boat back just in time to see Diana flying over you. She spotted you, and landed before you. "My lord? Do you need help?"
"No, Diana," you tell her. "Go on, save who you can. I'll join you soon." So she nodded with a frown, taking off once again for the burning building. Meanwhile, you figure running on top of the water would be faster than swimming through it. But you had to concentrate on finding an animal that can run like that for a while. A ghostly image of a basilisk lizard connected with your outline, and you start running.
You quickly saw... you were running on water! Getting over the ecstatic fact that you were like a slower Flash, you chuckle contently (like Dash from Incredibles as he did the same thing) as you raced across the pond. Land was getting bigger as you drew ever closer with every sprint, and you could finally smoke behind a line of buildings, but before you could continue, you had to catch your breath when you got back on terra firma.
At the site of the blaze, Wonder Woman was pushing and lifting debris for families and neighbors to escape the apartment building. And even while she was doing all the heroics, her thoughts trailed back to you, if you were all right.
At the same time, you arrived on the scene, beholding the terrible beauty burning from the ground up! Flames wildly flickered through any open window or open space. You saw at least one person that needed help while Diana had her hands full.
Of hot timber, brick and stone.
You grew claws as you ran into action, and galloped on all fours up the side of the building. Luckily, a firemen guessed which floor you were headed and sprayed any flames you came upon. You gripped both sides of the window and swung yourself inside. "Anyone here?" you called. The heat was intense and the smoke made it hard to breath, like with Batman before... You coughed hard, and as you were about to call again, you saw a little black girl. Crying in a corner of a bedroom. You crouch like a frog and crawled over to her, reaching your hand out. "It's ok," you say softly with a smile. "Let's get you out of here." She takes your hand, sniffling as you pick her up and held her close to you.
Outside, the girl's African-American parents had already made it out and they worried for their little girl. Inside, you walked towards a nearby exit, only to be stopped by the wooden floor giving way under your foot. The girl tumbled out of your grip, and watched as you try pulling yourself out
You were stuck!
You kept trying to pull yourself out, but it was no good. You told the girl to 'run!' But she didn't? She tried to help you out for saving her...
The parents watched with everyone else outside as the building began toppling down on itself. Including the floor where you and the girl were...!
Are they both all right?
