Fight back

While Tariq was distracted, Jake gathered his strength. He knew that he would only have one chance to escape; if he didn't escape now, chances were that he wouldn't ever escape. Jake waited for the moment to strike.

Finally, Jake saw Tariq close his eyes momentarily. He took his chance, and pushed the vampire. Tariq was caught off guard. He staggered away from Jake, his face still covered with blood. A silver coin dropped from him into Jake's lap.

Jake didn't need another chance. He sprang up, and ran to the door. Tariq recovered too slowly. By the time he stood, Jake had slammed the door shut.
