Chapter 3 by InstantPineapple InstantPineapple

Which society do you join?

Fencing

The next day I went around the fair. I remember walking through it last year but not really paying attention to anything. However, this year something I hadn’t considered before caught my attention.

Right in the middle of the room was a stand white stand. The word FENCING was printed on a poster set up behind the table. In front of the poster were 2 people, a tall girl with black hair and another person, in full fencing gear.

Fencing sounds perfect! No running around for 90 minutes kicking a ball. No tackling, just poking people with a sword. Who doesn’t want to do that?

The girl shouted through the crowd pointing at people and gesturing to come and talk to her. I slowly fought my way through to get to the stand. The girl introduced herself as Katie, the women’s team captain.

“So you up for stabbing people legally?” Katie asked.

“Yeah, sounds good. Do you guys do a lot of socials?” I asked

“Ha, do we? We do more socials than any other sports soc!” said the dressed up guy.

“Cool, and how many people are part of fencing?”

“Like 70? There’s loads. Some just come to the socials though” Katie replied.

Sounds perfect. Should be more than enough people there to meet someone.

“We have a taster session on Thursday if you want to try it out before putting down the membership fee” the armoured boy said.

“Membership fee! I thought this was free?” I asked.

“That would be nice, sorry it’s £130 which isn’t too bad for a sports society. But you don’t need to pay it straight away. Come along for a couple of weeks and see if you like it” Katie responded.

£130! A lot of money for a poor student. But if it’s what it takes to meet some new people. Do I even want to turn up to the taster session if I can’t afford to join?

Do you go to the taster session?
