Margaret chuckles. "You knocked her cold," she says. "I guess those nurse trainees have given you good practice in ass licking."

"You've given us a good first impression of Brenda's program," Margaret says. "We'll want to talk with Olivia and Margarita later, to find out about recruiting. Maybe an hour or two?"

"Thank you," you say.

Brenda tells you, "I have Betty over to help. Ask her if you need anything." She smiles and nods toward the door.

Betty had run the grill at the nurse trainee welcome party. You think she's the daughter of Brenda's husband Tom, by his first marriage. And Tommy had been there too, maybe Betty's brother?

"Thank you, Brenda," you tell her.

You leave the room with some relief. You feel quite at sea among Brenda's sorority sister Margaret and Margaret's lover and business partner Frieda, with her octopus tattoo, plotting and planning the next phase of Brenda's empire.

Of which you're now a part.

You go to the upstairs hall bathroom and give yourself a disbelieving look.
