Kate's brow furrowed. "Isn't that a line from a movie?"

John nodded. "It's what Galadriel said to Frodo in The Lord of the Rings."

"And... what does that have to do with me?"

"Nothing, I guess. It just popped into my head."

"Ooookay," sighed Kate. And with that she moved off to be with the other girls.

Kate and John never really talked much after that. In retrospect, she probably felt like she had put herself out there and gotten nothing in return. The trip to Hawaii proved to be a wonderful experience, but he never managed to move beyond a friendship relationship with any of the girls. During the ensuing months, he often replayed the conversation in his head, trying to think what he could have said differently or better. Perhaps you should too.
