Amber took a shortcut through the park to get back to her house. The whole time, she held the box close to her treasure, shielding it. She shivered beneath the chill air and looked around, paranoid that someone would see her like this.
Suddenly, she heard fits of laughter. Worried that she had been seen, she jumped into a bush, dropping the box. She cowered there, keeping her knees close to her breasts.
A group of people strolled past, clearly drunk from a party.
“Look at this!” cheered one woman. “Chocolate!”
“Aw, it's empty,” said another, whining.
“Maybe there's more around the park.”
The drunk woman scattered, none of them leaving the park. Amber hugged herself tighter, listening to them laugh stupidly. Any moment, any of them would see her.
This was horrible. Bad enough that she was naked. Bad enough that her mother caught her doing... that. Bad enough that there were drunk women on the verge of discovering her while all she could do was hide. But on top of all of that, she had nothing to show for it! Literally and figuratively!
There was a lesson to be learned here, but Amber had no idea what it was.
