Chapter 6

What good is 'financial security' when your little sister is in charge of little things like physical law?
Emily does you a favor and wants something in return
"♪ Dy-lan ♩..." You hear Emily call you from her new bedroom. You didn't want to know what she was up to. "Dylan?" Your computer turns itself on, and you watch as your webcam actually aims at your bed. Your sister appears on the screen. "You're not still mad about the room, are you?" Emily asks.
"I'm just...tired, I guess," You lie.
"Let me wake you up with something. Come here!" You feel yourself shoved out of your bed, and you walk toward the door so that she doesn't **** you to.
"No, right here! On the screen." You sigh and walk over, wondering what weirdness you're about to experience. "This is your main crypto wallet, right?" Emily asks. The screen of her becomes a window, and the app for your wallet pulls itself up.
"Yeah," you say, glancing at it offhandedly before you do a double take. "Holy shit! Did you —"
"Now nobody has to work," Emily says. "I didn't want to get too crazy...for now...but I figured $20 million was enough to set you up for an early retirement."
"Is...is this real?" You ask, clicking around and looking at the details. Emily smirks at the screen. You gasp as both the simple pressboard desk and economy computer chair lift off the ground and levitate a couple feet above the floor. "Okay, okay--I get it. It's real." Your sister nods on the screen, and you and the furniture are both placed back on a solid surface. You think about the implications of your new portfolio. Particularly with bitcoin...if you have more, someone else must have less. Unless she just mined it, but... "Emily, did you take this money from someone?" She shakes her head.
"I didn't take anything from anyone," She said. "It's yours now. Ours. What difference does it make?" She asks.
"It's just...I mean, I don't know how you're doing all these things, and I don't want there to be any issues with--" Your jaw snaps shut, and Emily's cheerful smirk dissolves to frustration.
"I try to do something nice, and you can't even say thank you?" She says. She disappears from the window, leaving your empty former computer chair in your newly-decorated former room.
"Yahh!" You jump back in shock as she reappears on the OVERLAY of your desktop now. You're locked in place as a glowing, pixelated arm reaches out from the monitor and grabs your chin, directing your gaze to your wallet.
"Any normal person would see a fraction of things I can do and either worship me or fear me like a deity," She says, "But YOU still see me as your little sister." She points to your wallet. "Do you see this?! You don't have to work another day of your life." Your digitized sister is freaking you out more than ever. At least something like telekinesis is fathomable, but this goes beyond controlling your computer with her mind. This is crazy. You need to try to calm her down, but...
"Uh, yeah--no, Em, it's not that--"
"I can articulate your short-sighted thoughts better than you can, Dylan. You have some silly concern about the 'balance of things' or whatever. Because, what, your reckless little sister doesn't deserve power like this? Doesn't have the responsibility to handle it?" The glowing arm retreats into the machine, and your computer starts acting weird. A bunch of things open all at once, and suddenly it looks like a hacker is rifling through things.
"Em, it's just--"
"I can do ANYTHING, Dylan, and I decided to make you rich enough that you can quit your stupid job. Don't you think that's extremely generous?" The voice asks. "Don't you think you OWE me something? Maybe a little respect?" You're trying to follow what she's doing, but the apps are switching too quickly. You think you see her opening up a couple folders you'd rather she didn't, but the screen quickly flashes to browsers showing online stores. Clothing. Tech. Oh no. Not...bondage equipment?
"I'm sorry, Emily! Thank you!" You say. "Please don't do anything harsh, I didn't mean--"
"Why would I be harsh?" Emily asks. "I'm just your little sister. Clearly I'm not someone to be taken seriously, no matter what I'm capable of." All the windows on your machine close up, and it seems to return to normal. You look around in the silence, worried about what's coming next.
"Uh...Emily?"
"You agree that you owe me a favor, right?" The soft cheerfulness seems to return to her voice, but it's not very comforting to you.
"Uh...yeah!" You say, still looking around. "Of course!"
"A big favor," She says. "Like a TWENTY MILLION DOLLAR favor." You swallow hard, looking at your computer screen again since her voice is still coming from your speakers.
"Whatever you want, Emily," You say, doing your best to appease her disembodied voice.
"Good! That's a start," She giggles. "But...twenty million is a lot of money, so maybe you can pay it back in installments." You don't like the sound of that, but you don't have much of a choice in the matter. "Here's what you're going to do for me first..."
What's Dylan's first repayment?
