What Story do you want to hear?

Emi's Story

I continued to search around the area to find out if others were affected by the strange symbols that began to permeate the province, and I was introduced to Emi, Mei's aunt. She was a librarian in the provincial library, living a quiet life enjoying her favorite pursuit: books. However, after the following experience, her life and those of the other members of her family, were dramatically changed by the symbol that she encountered.

To my surprise, her family linked to my own, and it was incredibly strange after hearing about her experience for me to learn that she was a distant cousin. Not only that, but my family stemmed from the same branch as Mei and Kentaro's. There was something about her story that resonated deeply with me, probably because I am also a mother and have a deep love for books. After hearing her story, I hope you can see why this symbol truly began to bother me deeply.

Emi spent yet another day in the quite building. While she enjoyed being surrounded by books, the times had changed so much that most people rarely visited. Regularly, the only visitors they had to the library were the strange old men who wanted to use the free computers for their debauched desires. After banning most of these men, that meant she spent day after day logging new books, transferring older books to better libraries, and logging everything in their online inventory. This day had been no different.

However, as she was beginning to close up the building and head out to meet up with her sons as they finished their part-time jobs, she noticed something in their after hours drop box. She was confused and perplexed by it because she was sure that she'd checked the drop box at the start of her day. Inside, she found a small package, wrapped entirely in newspaper and tied with old twine, and picking it up, she realized that it was relatively heavy. But being a librarian, she could tell by its heft that it was a thick, leather bound book before she even untied the twine.

As she unwrapped the book, she found herself looking at an old tome, much as she expected, but it looked well used. The corners of the binding were rounded from used and there were oil stains on the edges of the closed pages. Someone had kept this book for a long time, supposing that it had come from their library, and she knew that she would have to dig through the archived records to find out if they ever loaned it out. Her first feeling was that this had been a mistake, that someone had borrowed this book from another library, likely one of the universities, and had returned it to her thinking that she would be able to get it back to its original owner. Several people had a mistaken belief that all the libraries were interlinked in such a way that returning a book to one meant the same as returning it to all. She'd encountered this sort of thing several times before.

Turning it in her hands, she felt an urge pulling her to open the book. As she turned to the title page, she saw a hand written inscription scribbled on the cover. It was old and in a language that she didn't understand, but below the signature, someone had drawn a symbol. It looked an ancient, forgotten version of a Chinese character, and something about it pulled to her, calling into a deep part of her mind. It was a part of her mind that hadn't been stimulated in a long time.

She felt thoughts in her mind, like she could understand the transcription without actually reading the words. They were a message to whomever opened the book, filling her mind with images and thoughts she'd never considered before. Everything about life and existence changed in her mind and it seemed, for a moment, like she knew everything that had ever been and ever would be. It was an experience that couldn't possibly described, but that part of her mind that had been closed off opened and took over her entire mind.

And as she realized that nothing would ever be the same, she realized that she was no longer alone in the library. Someone had come in while she was listening to the secrets whispered by the book, and they stood there in the doorway, calling out to her. As her eyes fell upon them, she knew everything about them, from their personal history to their darkest desires. And she knew exactly what they were looking for, even if they weren't willing to admit it to themselves.
