Chapter 15 by cphi cphi

How does she behave?

Drunk mess.

Beth and Kyle proceeded to have a very good time together at Diva's. They both got some food from the truck that surprised Kyle with it's quality. They both got nice and juicy with drinks, and by 7:15, Beth was returning from the bathroom to see Kyle chatting with a laughing cocktail waitress in a scandalously small silver bikini.
Her name was Hillary, apparently. Beth smiled and nodded as Kyle told her about Hillary: 22 and loving life, saving up some money to go to community college in the fall. Kyle told a joke, and Hillary laughed so hard she had to lean on his arm. Beth felt something... twinge inside. Are...are you jealous? He's not your man.
But he's cute... and... I'm lonely...
She didn't know when she had started ordering shots, but it seemed like every time Hillary touched Kyle's arm or laughed at his joke, she needed mas tequila.
....
....
"HEY MAN...SHE'S DRUNK...."
...
...
...
"SHE'S GOT A BOYF...."
_

Beth was kneeling on the dirty bathroom floor, face down, emptying her stomach into the bowl over and over. Kyle was holding her hair.
"Jesus... I think we might need to get you home..."
"Mmmfine...." Beth wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. "I'm a grown woman, Brian... don't treat me likkke a child..."
"It's Kyle, actually..."
...
...
...
Beth was lying on a bench on her side. Her head was in Kyle's lap and she was trying to stop the world from tilting... trying to remember what happened.
"Why...what's happening..."
"You're soaked in liquor is what's happening, and you tried to walk into traffic."
"Fuuuuck...."
...
....
....
Beth's arm was draped over Kyle's shoulder. They were stepping gently off the bus in front of her complex.
"mmm sorry... I ruined your night out."
"It's ok."
"Did you get her number...?" Beth was still slurring her words, and her balance was shot.
"Who's number?"
"...the blonde...little thing... Helen?"
"Hillary? No." Kyle looked at her sideways. "If I didn't know that it makes no sense, I'd think you were jealous."
Beth slumped against his strength, which was considerable, she realized. He could pick me up and carry me like a towel if he wanted.
"I... I don't know what I am." She pulled out her phone. It was only 8:40 PM. Wow. I must have gotten epically wasted. She noted, with annoyance, that Brian wasn't home yet.
Kyle brought her inside, laid her on her side on the couch, and brought her a bottle of water from the fridge. "Are you...?"
"I think I've booted as much as I'm going to..." Beth drank the water slowly. "Thanks."
"So what's up? We've known each other for half a day and you're getting white girl wasted because I was talking to a girl."
"I don't know... I'm...." she began to confide in Kyle about her situation. The pressures and uncertainties that crop up when you face the prospect of spending your life with someone. The change in their relationship dynamic... and hinted at her needs going unfulfilled a little to long at a time. By the time she had spilled it all out, she was sitting up. The room wasn't spinning anymore, but now she was crying, leaning on his shoulder.
"Look... I'm the last person to give advice about that sh... about that stuff." He was rubbing her shoulders with his strong hands. Stop that. "Brian, we haven't always seen eye to eye, and we've both done some things...." he shook his head. "But he's a good guy. I'm sure that once he makes partner, he'll be able to spend more time.... on your relationship."
"I don't care about money....." that wasn't....strictly true. She wanted Brian to succeed, and financial security was something they both cared about... but she wanted the man she fell in love with... she wanted him back. Or a reasonable substitute...
STOP.
THAT.

"Wh-" whatever Kyle had been about to say was cut off by the sound of keys in the door.

What's next?
