Don't worry about it.

I watched the little brown haired girl standing behind Sarah. It is amazing how one person could immediately knock all the air out of your lungs. I stood in the bedroom, looking back and forth between Sarah and the little girl. I lost all abilities to form coherent words. I was shocked.How could Sarah have a kid?

Sarah saw my expression and her face immediately brightened.

“Jake.” I looked at Sarah when she called my name.

She shook her head, “She is not my child. It is just one of my friend’s kid.”

I didn’t believe her at first. How could she lie to my face about having sex with someone else and then have a kid? These questions were circling my head as I observed the timid girl. Then, I noticed that the kid looked nothing like Sarah. Sure she had brown hair but, her eyes and face did not resemble Sarah’s. The little kid had black eyes and her nose was so different from Sarah’s. She looks like…”Stacy.” I muttered.

Sarah nodded her head. “Stacy went to a party and got wasted. Woke up with a guy next to her in bed. She had a kid and was scared of her family finding out. Stacy decided to leave little McKenzie with me for the time being. Stacy comes by every few days to check on Kenzie but other than that, my family is the only family she knows. She even calls me ‘mommy’.”

I nodded my head at Sarah’s explanation. Sounds like something Stacy would do. She was always known in high school as the party animal.

I walked up to the little girl and held out my hand. “Hey Kenzie, nice to meet you.” Kenzie seemed scared by my presence but looked at Sarah. Sarah smiled at her and told her that it is okay to talk to me. Kenzie shook my hand with her small hand and then surprised me by hugging me. It felt nice to have a kid hug you so I hugged her back.

“Are you my daddy?” she asked. I smiled at Sarah and replied, “Um...you can call me that if you want.” Kenzie seemed satisfied at my response and said, “Hi daddy!” I played with Kenzie a little until Sarah told her that it was nap time.

“So, how old is she?” I questioned Sarah after finally putting the energetic Kenzie to sleep. She replied with five years old.

“What is your impression of her?” Sarah asked me.

“She ask pretty blunt questions. She definitely caught me off guard but seems like a great kid overall.” I replied as I walked to the front door. I hugged Sarah and gave her a goodbye kiss. I told her that I’ll see her later and walked back to my house.
