“‘It’s a tough one. But I’ll join the last two girls, and say I disagree.” You catch the faint smile on Charmaine’s face, and Lisa gives you a look that seems more suspicious than anything else… but hey, it’s got to be better than getting ignored, right?

“Well, we finally got some diversity of responses by the end,” the professor says, sounding more cheerful. “To be clear, you’re not locked into your answer. These are first thoughts only! So feel free to change your mind a dozen times before now and Thursday night, when most of you will doubtlessly be drafting out your first thoughts.” He chuckles to himself at the joke. “Anyways, that’s enough about that. Onto the meat of the class! Let’s start with the Atwood. **** Fantasies, huh, provocative title right? What did people think?”

The class quickly descends into heated discussion as people argue over the portrayal of women and the role (or lack of one) that they have to play in popular culture. It feels a little bit weird to be the only male voice in the room, the professor excepted of course, and you definitely feel the pressure to not just represent your sex, but to also say the correct thing, much less win over the girls in the room.

It’s not an easy job, but you think you hold up okay, and the class ends with the professor giving you a gentle reminder that he has his office hours later this afternoon. You check your schedule, not having quite memorised all the times yet, and see that it fits in right before your psych class. Lisa, Lucille, and Charmaine all nod intently at his announcement, and you guess that they’re going to be there.

Lunch afterwards is a quick affair at the cafeteria. You finish the hearty portion of mac and cheese, managing to snag a hot and steaming portion fresh out of the kitchen.
