Chapter 9
What's next?
Dirty deals
*She's going to make a great lawyer someday,* Rachel thought as she watched her friend. Melly already had this one look down to a science, like a shark getting ready to bite down. Divorce attorneys would kill to have a look like that in their back pocket.
"Listen very closely to what I'm saying, and when you answer me, don’t bullshit," she instructed Leo.
He put two fingers over his heart. "Scout's honor," he promised.
"Someone's gotten a hold of some pictures of Rachel that they shouldn’t have. Videos too, probably. We know you have some and aren't shy about telling people. Who has them? And who knows?" she asked.
Rachel was awestruck. Melly had put it totally on Leo's plate, like he was the cause of the whole problem. And without the slightest indication that it was her *mom* of all people who had seen "something they shouldn’t have." She made a mental note not to get on her friend's bad side, and to be very thankful she was on her good side.
"How do you know it was me?" Leo said with a grin. "No offense, Rach, but you know that the number of people you've given it up for isn’t exactly low. I'm just the one you beg when you really need a lay."
Rachel’s ears tingled. She hadn't known she could still feel shame like that, but maybe the visit from her mom had reconnected her with it. "Just answer the question," she insisted. "I haven’t forgotten the thing with Walt. You're lucky I still talk to you."
"Okay, sure. Let's cut it off then," said Leo, totally nonchalant.
Melly put up her hand in a gentle sign for Rachel to hold off. Plus, it made them look like she was just barely able to keep a grip on her 'client.' She didn't know what she would do to express her gratitude when this was done. "We're all friends here," she said. "Rachel just wants to know who might have 'content' of her in, let's say, 'compromising positions,' alright?"
"And I'll just say," began Leo, "That I could probably figure it out, but you're asking a lot from me."
Rachel had a creeping suspicion that she was screwed. "What are you talking about?" she asked.
He grinned like the Cheshire Cat. "I'm just saying that if you want me to do you a favor, you'd better be prepared to show me how grateful you are."
Melly's eyes narrowed under two fiery brows. "And what do you mean by that?" she asked.
What's next?
A Weekend at Wilson U
College is a little different than Miranda Byrne remembered, and a lot less academic than her daughter Rachel thought it would be.
Miranda Byrne has come down to her daughter's college for her first visit. She discovers that her so-studious daughter has blossomed on campus, but not in the ways she expected or hoped for. There seems to be a lot less studying and a lot more shenanigans than there should be. An alum of Wilson University herself, Miranda tries to help her daughter clean up her life... while she also remembers just what she left behind nearly twenty years ago.
