Delivery Work

“What kind of job?” asked Zoë.

“A simple pick up and deliver job.” Mal said, “Problem is who it’s for.”

“Who?” said Zoë seriously?

“Verov.” Mal said under his breath looking down at the table as he sat on his chair.

“Verov!” replied Zoë, “But didn’t we…”

“Yes.”

“And are you still owe…”

“Yes.”

“And didn’t he…”

“Yes okay this isn’t exactly the best job but he’s paying good money and he’s giving 20% up front.”

“Who is he?” asked Kaylee.

“He’s before your time,” said Zoë, “One of our earliest jobs.”

“He’s a freelance scientist working in all kinds of weird project which he sells to the highest bidder mainly Alliance but he does contract work for others developing weapons, vaccines, defenses, security systems enhanced narcotics what ever you pay him for.”

“Problem was he hired us to take a shipment of narcotics to a world where the local workforce had rebelled and the overseers wanted to regain control by using a **** that was so addictive they’d do anything to get more and dumping it in the water supply so everyone would be dosed and he paid us 50% up front.” Said Zoë.

“Don’t see the problem,” said Jayne, “So some guys get a population of slaves you get a decent cut so what?”

“We didn’t deliver, once we found out what the **** were for we destroyed them and took the money, Verov put a price on Mal’s head.”

“And now we’re taking work from him.” Said Jayne, “Your funeral. Can I have the ship.”

“No, and he said he’d cancel the contract if I deliver his cargo which he assures me won’t harm anyone this time and he’ll cancel my debut which has apparently been gaining interest on all future earning he lost out on because of me.”

“And you believe him, the mans a liar, a cheat, a **** and an abomination to science, he uses live human test subjects in his experiments and lest we forget your big no no he’s an Alliance sympathizer.”

“Well I’m the Captain and we’re taking the job.”
