Chapter 7
by whizzper
What will Druuna chose to do?
Decision is taken from her.
Druuna sat back on her haunches as she looked at the town one more time when she heard a snap of a twig behind her. In a flash she was up and was starting her run for safety when she heard the small voice.
"Oh, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to scare you like that...please don't run!"
Druuna kind of skid to a halt as she looked back to see a girl standing there in a loincloth and hemp top. Her hair was pulled back in a messy ponytail. Druuna couldn't tell if the hair was light brown or a dirty blond, with the dirt being actual dirt.
"I'm Kara!" the girl says cheerily, as she sits down next to where Druuna had been squatting a moment before. "Come back....please?"
Druuna looks around, trying to discern if this was a trap.
"I don't want to hurt you, Miss. I really don't. I can get you into the town...and get you some clothes!" She said to the tantalizingly nude Druuna.
Druuna smiled at her slowly and walked the couple steps she had made it before stopping back to the girl, sitting down next to her.
Kara's smile was infectious as she asked questions of Druuna, "So...why are you nekkid?" She finally asks after fifteen minutes of 20 Questions.
"That's a long story Kara. There are times when I really don't believe some of the thing's I've gone through, you know."
"I see. Well, my mom and dad should have dinner ready by now, so why don't we head on in, I'm sure they would welcome you with open arms. On one condition. You have to help me with something, okay?"
The thought of food overrode Druuna's question of what the favor is as she nodded, "Anything! I'm famished!"
Kara giggled, "Good! Trust me on this, my mom makes the best of eats in the world!"
The two stood up, Kara leading the way as they walked towards the walled town. Kara continued chattering away as they went up to a small door that from a distance would be imperceptible. "You have two doors?"
"The big one is a fake, my dad thought that one up. He's so smart. Oh, and don't worry about being nude, it's dinner time everyone except the guards are eating as is proscribed by Law."
"Law?" Druuna asked, wondering why Kara had used the word Law as though it were her deity.
"The Law is what makes this City work, Druuna. If it weren't for the Law then there wouldn't be civilization. Without the Law we'd be savages like my father told me most people in the Wastes are. Which is why for the most part the Law forbids interaction with the Waste Dwellers. There are exceptions though. There are loopholes the provide sanctuary for Travellers of the Wastes. You would be the first Traveller I have encountered." Kara stops in front of what appears to be a General Store, she turns to Druuna, the first look of worry on her face. "You...you are a Traveller...and not a Dweller...right?"
"What's the definition of both? I mean if we go with the true definitions of both, then technically I'm both."
Just asking that questions seems to put Kara at ease, as the smile creeps back to her face, "A Traveller is someone that is looking for a way to bring Civilization back, a Traveller seeks knowledge of the Old Ways, and is Governed by the Natural Law that our Laws are derived from. A Dweller is a seeker of power and greed and survival at any costs. While a Dweller can become a Traveller given the proper motive, they are forever contaminated with the mentality and can slip back into it at any moment."
"Oh, then I am definitely a Traveller!" Druuna says hastily.
"The moment you asked the difference, and brought up the fact that by exact definition you are both I knew you were a Traveller."
"So who devised your Laws?"
"A Committee mainly, of which, my father is Law Keeper. There are the Five Immutable Laws. They govern everything. Then there are the Lesser Laws. The Lesser Laws are in effect so long as they don't contradict the Immutable Laws. My favorite is the Lesser Law of the Chosen. 'And the Citizen on his or her eighteenth Summer shall enter the wastes and bring back the Chosen Traveller as his or her first, without reproach nor censure.' I love that last part without reproach nor censure. And my father concurred with my own interpretation of it too, and so here you are."
Druuna looked over the girl again as the pieces started clanging together in her head and formed a picture that is getting clearer, "Kara...is...is this like a mating ritual?"
"Well, we're a small community so to avoid genetic defects we have to recruit I guess you can say. And I was just never into boys and...I saw you and..." Kara stops and turns again this time in front of what appears to be an old Courthouse. "If...if you are not into girls then I can understand. I...saw you and I thought...I thought you..."
"Oh...oh, don't start crying!" Druuna exclaims and grabs the younger girl by her shoulders and drew her into a strong hug. "I am flattered! I just have had some situations Travelling the wastes that, well it leaves me skittish. What are the conditions of the law?"
Kara looks into your eyes, "You...you'd be my husband. We...we'd live and learn and love and..."
"We can't have kids...and I do like both men and women, Kara."
"Well, I thought of that too, and there may be a Lesser Law that can provide you with that loophole, so long as it doesn't contradict the Immutable Law of One and One."
"One Husband One Wife?" Druuna asks, and Kara nods.
"It's to avoid jealousy. You have one spouse and it's for life. There is a proviso for ****, but it's rarely used." Kara searched Druuna's eyes. "Look...I...I think I fell in love with you the moment I saw you, Druuna. If...if you don't want to go this route...can I leave with you?"
Does Druuna go through with the Ceremony, or refuse? If she refuses does she take Kara along?
