David, chosen to show the new intern the ropes

Emily walked straight up to the young man standing a few steps away with a notepad in his hand. He pretended to be concentrating on the small screen, but she had long since noticed that he was watching her out of the corner of his eye.

She held out her hand. “Hi, I'm Emily.”

He looked up and stared at her. He seemed a little startled and took a second or two to respond.

“Oh, yes, hello Emily. We've been expecting you. My name is David and I'm here to show you around and help you get started with your new job.”

“Cute, a shy one,” thought Emily. They shook hands, and when he tried to pull his hand away, she held on to it. Not for long, but long enough that he looked down in surprise.

“Ahem.” He coughed and tried to pull his hand back, but didn't dare to pull away forcefully.

Emily laughed cheerfully. “So you're the poor guy who has to babysit me now?” Then she let go of him. His hand jerked back as if he had been burned.

“Oh, I wouldn't call it babysitting. I just want to help you settle into your new position.”

“Oh, I know all about settling in different positions, I have quite a bit of experience.”

David looked at her closely to see if she meant what she said. But she smiled so innocently, as if it were a completely ordinary remark.

At a desk nearby, one of their colleagues raised his fist to his mouth and coughed into it, but he couldn't quite hide the grin behind it.

David looked at the checklist on his notepad. “Where shall we start? Would you like to meet the other colleagues first, go to your workstation, or get a refreshment in the coffee kitchen?”
