Consequences and Choices
Consequences and Choices- rough draft v3
The silence in the room stretched on as Jasmine typed furiously on her laptop, her eyes darting back and forth across the screen. Natalie watched her work, her heart pounding in her chest as she explained in a low voice how she had manipulated the system, how she had used her access and knowledge to bend the rules and rig the game against Mark.
When Jasmine was done, they both sat in silence, each lost in their own thoughts. The weight of what Natalie had done hung heavily between them, the reality of the situation slowly sinking in.
Finally, Natalie sighed and reached for her phone. "I...I need to talk to Luraine," she said, her voice shaking slightly. "I need to...to explain."
Jasmine nodded, watching as Natalie dialed Luraine's number and held the phone to her ear. She listened as Natalie explained everything, her voice steady and firm despite the tears that welled up in her eyes.
When Natalie was finished, there was a long pause on the other end of the line. Finally, Luraine's voice came through, her tone heavy with disappointment. "Natalie, Jasmine, I...I can't believe you would do this," she said. "You used our friendship, your status...it's a betrayal. And there will be consequences."
Natalie nodded, her throat tight. "I understand, Luraine," she said quietly.
"But," Luraine continued, "I can't ignore what Mark did either. Even if you set him up, he still acted inappropriately, and that's not acceptable. I'll give him his job back if he completes his retraining, and all demerits will be removed from his file. But I'm disappointed in you both. This is not how we do things."
As Natalie hung up the phone, she turned to Jasmine, her eyes filled with regret. "I'm sorry," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I'm so sorry."
The apartment was eerily silent, a sharp contrast to the turmoil that lay heavy between Natalie and Jasmine. Natalie sat in their shared living space, her fingers nervously playing with a loose thread on the couch cushion. Jasmine looked on, her eyes filled with a complex mix of emotions as Natalie began to explain her ill-conceived plan to sabotage Mark's retraining and mandatory counseling.
"I had a PI investigate him, you know," Natalie admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. The words hung in the air, a potent testament to the lengths she had gone. "I dug into his past, found things I thought would be useful, and... and I manipulated his file. I added things that I knew would rattle the cages of the people running the program."
She paused, the regret in her eyes deepening. "The thing is, from what I found out, Mark... Mark might actually have a shot at turning things around if he's given a fair shot at this. He's hit rock bottom, and according to the psych evaluation in his file, he genuinely believes in being a good man. His idea of 'good' is just... it's skewed because of his own trauma and self-hatred."
Natalie's voice trailed off, the weight of her actions sinking in. She looked at Jasmine, her eyes filled with a **** uncertainty. "I don't know how to undo this, Jas," she confessed, her voice trembling with a vulnerability that Jasmine hadn't seen in a long time.
But Jasmine did. Her mind was already formulating a plan, a way to rectify the damage Natalie had caused. It was risky, and it would require Luraine's help, which meant confessing to even more of their wrongdoings, but it was the only chance they had to give Mark a fair shot at the retraining.
With a shared glance, they sprang into action. Racing to the gym, their hearts pounded in sync with the urgency of their mission. As they approached the gym, they quickly sent a text to Luraine, pleading for her help. When they arrived, the gym was already bustling with the early morning crowd, but Luraine was waiting for them in her office, her face stern and foreboding.
She listened as they explained, her disappointment palpable in the silent room. Natalie's words hung heavily in the air, a confession of betrayal that left a bitter taste. But despite everything, Luraine agreed to help them, her loyalty to them still evident even in the face of their deception.
"You both realize that there will be consequences for this, right?" she asked, her voice stern and serious. "Best case scenario, Jasmine, you lose your job. Worst case, we're looking at legal action."
They both nodded, their faces pale but resolute.
The atmosphere in Luraine's office was tense as Natalie and Jasmine sat across from her, their hands clasped together in a tight knot of shared apprehension. Luraine sat behind her desk, her typically warm gaze replaced with a stern, frosty stare. She had pulled Mark's files onto her computer and was working swiftly to correct the false information Natalie had added.
"I don't understand, Natalie," Luraine finally spoke, her voice strained. "Why would you do this? Why would you betray me, use me, put my gym in jeopardy, and tarnish the reputation of my life's work?"
Her questions hung in the air, heavy and damning. Natalie swallowed hard, her gaze dropped to her lap. She felt Jasmine squeeze her hand, offering silent support.
"I... I was angry," Natalie began, her voice small. "I felt that Mark needed to be taught a lesson, to understand the pain he caused Jasmine. But I see now that I was wrong. I let my anger and my need for **** cloud my judgment."
Luraine sighed heavily, pinching the bridge of her nose. "That's not a good enough reason, Natalie. You're smarter than this. You're better than this." Her voice was not harsh, but it held a deep disappointment that cut deeper than any reprimand.
Natalie nodded, tears welling in her eyes. "I know. I'm sorry, Luraine. I didn't think about the consequences. I didn't think about how it would affect you or the gym. I'm sorry."
The room fell silent again as Luraine finished fixing the files. She picked up her phone, dialing the number for the program director. Natalie and Jasmine watched as she calmly explained the mix-up, promising to send over the correct files immediately.
Once the call was over, Luraine turned her attention back to Natalie and Jasmine. "I've done my part," she said, her voice weary. "Now it's your turn. I want you both to think about the impact of your actions, not just on yourselves, but on everyone around you. What you did was selfish and thoughtless. I hope you both realize that. I'll let you know when this is resolved with mark, and after talking with the firm that handles our legal issues, what is decided in regards to your actions. Consider yourself on unpaid leave until then, Do not contact Me or the Gym until after the Firm or I contact you, unless you need to confess anything else and need my help to fix it."
With that, she ushered them out of her office. As the door closed behind them, Natalie and Jasmine exchanged a glance. They had a lot to think about, a lot to make amends for. But for now, they had done what they could to fix the immediate damage it was time to tackle the part that had Jasmine the most anxious. This Leo guy.
They made the call from the gym parking lot, sitting in Natalie's car, hands held tight. Natalie put the phone on speaker, placing it on the dashboard between them. The phone rang twice before Leo picked up.
"Leo speaking," came the confident voice from the other end.
"Leo, it's Natalie," she said, her voice steady, despite the anxiety churning in her stomach.
"Ah, Natalie!" Leo's voice was cheerful, but there was a dangerous edge to it that made both women tense. "I was just reviewing our plan. It's coming along splendidly."
"Leo, about that," Natalie began, glancing at Jasmine. "We need to cancel it."
Silence from the other end. Then, a dark chuckle. "Cancel? After all the work I've put in? I don't think so."
"But Mark--" Natalie began.
"Mark is a bigot who deserves to be taken down a peg," Leo cut in, his voice sharp. "And he's your responsibility, not mine. You wanted him humiliated, and that's exactly what I'm going to do."
"Leo, please," Jasmine interjected, her voice full of quiet pleading. "We made a mistake. We can't go through with this. We can't let you go through with this."
Leo's laughter was cold. "A mistake? That's an understatement. You've set something in motion that can't be easily stopped, ladies. But don't worry. Mark will be fine, more or less."
Leo's voice turned thoughtful, a dangerous note in it. "Though, come to think of it, I may have a solution. With everything already set up, If Mark's not in the place and state you promised I'll just stop playing nice with the Bigot and I'll have someone 'retrieve him', maybe A little cutie slides up to him in a bar and spikes his drink, he gets walked out by some 'friends helping their drunk buddy get home' then right before the big reveal we prep him, its crazy what a little coke and E will do when you find yourself on a stage. Unless..." He paused for effect. "Do you have a replacement in mind who can fill the role he was going to?"
Natalie felt a cold dread settle in her stomach. "Replacement?"
"Yes," Leo drawled, his voice sounding like a cat playing with a mouse. "I doubt you could fill the role by yourself. Mark is a man's man. It's going to take more than one woman to replace him with these clientele. Maybe if your girlfriend was there too, willing to act the part of a male?"
The air in the car turned frosty as the implications of Leo's words hung in the air. The call ended abruptly, leaving Natalie and Jasmine staring at the silent phone in stunned silence.
As Leo's insinuations hung in the air, the tension in the car ratcheted up to a near palpable level. The silence between them was now a chasm that seemed impossible to bridge. Natalie held the phone limply in her hands, her eyes locked on the blank screen.
Finally, Jasmine broke the silence. "I won't let someone else suffer because of our mistakes, Natalie," she said, her voice low but firm. "I won't allow myself to be the cause of someone else's pain."
Natalie whipped her head around, her gaze meeting Jasmine's. "You can't be serious," she said, her voice shaking with disbelief and fear. "You can't be considering doing...that. Not after everything you've been through, everything you've worked so hard to achieve."
But Jasmine's expression was resolute, the fire in her eyes unwavering. "I am serious, Natalie," she said, her voice steady as a rock in a turbulent sea. "I've lived my life hiding, pretending to be someone I'm not. I've lived my life in fear, in pain, and I won't let anyone else go through that, not if I can help it."
Natalie's hands clenched around the steering wheel, her knuckles white with the **** of her grip. "But, Jasmine," she protested, the words catching in her throat. "You've just started living as yourself, embracing your identity. Going back to playing a man, even for a night...it'll undo all the progress you've made. It'll...it'll break you."
Jasmine shook her head, a sad smile playing on her lips. "Maybe it will," she said, her voice soft. "But sometimes, doing the right thing hurts. Sometimes, we have to make sacrifices for the greater good. And if my sacrifice can save someone else from suffering, then it's a price I'm willing to pay."
Natalie could only stare at her, her heart pounding in her chest. "No," she said, her voice barely more than a whisper. "No, Jasmine, I...I can't let you do this. I won't let you sacrifice your own peace now that you've finally found it. There has to be another way. I...I'll find another way. I promise."
Jasmine reached over, her hand covering Natalie's. "I hope you do, Natalie," she said, her voice filled with a quiet strength. "But if you don't...I'm ready to do what needs to be done."
Natalie shook her head, her grip on Jasmine's hand tightening. "No, Jasmine. Even if I can't find a way, I...I won't let you do this. I can't..."
Jasmine's gaze hardened. "Natalie," she said, her voice clear and firm. "This whole situation started because you decided to take away my choice in how to handle my own hurt. You thought you were protecting me, but you were only thinking of yourself. You didn't consider the consequences of your actions, and now we're both in a situation neither of us want to be in."
She squeezed Natalie's hand, her thumb tracing soft circles on the back of her hand. "I love you, Natalie. Please, don't make that mistake again. Don't take away my agency just because you're my Dom and you feel it's your place."
Natalie blinked back tears, her gaze meeting Jasmine's. "That's not what I'm doing, Jasmine," she said, her voice trembling with emotion. "That's not what my intention is. I'm scared, Jasmine. I can't lose you. I won't. You mean everything to me."
"But Natalie," Jasmine said gently, "taking away my choices, making decisions for me...that's not love. That's control, beyond anything that's appropriate even for our dynamic, once its gone this far off the rails you need to listen to your partner. And I know that's not who you are. I need you to trust me, to respect me. And that means respecting my choices, even when they scare you."
Natalie looked down at their entwined hands, her breath hitching in her chest. "I...I don't want to hurt you, Jasmine," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I just...I just want to protect you."
"I know," Jasmine said, her voice soft. "But I don't need you to protect me if it means hurting others and taking away my free will, Natalie. I need you to stand by me, to support me. Can you do that?"
Can she?
