Chapter 4
by Hank-the-Bobcat
How should she present herself?
Confront them.
Amy arrived in the coffee shop early. She wore a beanie and other uncharacteristic items in order to not look too obviously like herself, at least from a distance. She took a booth in the back where she could watch.
Jack arrived first. He immediately took a booth near the entrance, waiting for Kelly.
Several minutes later, Delilah walked in. She and Jack immediately noticed each other. Delilah harrumphed and kept walking, while Jack decided not to be bothered, and returned his attention to the main entrance to await the arrival of his date who wouldn’t be showing up.
Amy got up and approached Delilah, making sure she didn’t wander too far from Jack before she greeted her.
“Thanks for coming!” Amy began, with badly faked cheer.
“Don’t kid yourself,” Delilah retorted. “I’m not here as a favor to you. I’m here because even someone like you deserve a chance to explain yourself. That, and maybe morbid curiosity about what scheme your really trying to pull this time. But if you honestly just want to talk about us, can we at least get out of earshot of… wait. You didn’t invite Jack here, too, did you?”
“No, she didn’t,” Jack cut in, matter-of-factly, “I’m here to meet up with another friend. I’ll stay out of whatever business the two of you have.”
Jack returned his attention to the door, but then a puzzled look came over his face as things suddenly started to click in his mind.
“Wait a minute!” he said, getting up form his seat. “Amy, was that seriously you? I KNEW something was off about that phone call!”
“Fine, guilty as charged,” Amy said with a proud grin. “But now that we’re all…”
“SERIOUSLY?” Delilah interrupted, furiously. “Sometimes it’s like you can’t even ask for a simple thing without making a scheme out of it! What, does lying to people make you feel powerful?”
“I was just thinking I owe the two of you an apology,” Amy said. “And to show how sorry I am, I got you a little…”
“As long as we’re all gathered here,” Jack interrupted, “I’ve been dying to know which one of us was your side bitch. Or was that both of us?”
“Like I was trying to say,” Amy said, fingering the wand inside her bag, “I got the two of you a little gift… something to help us all get along better.” She was starting to lose her patience with all the interruptions, and was tempted to cast a spell on them now, forgoing the preamble she had carefully prepared.
“Let me guess… you’re going to invite us home to have a three-way with you so we can all share germs one last time. I’ll pass,” Delilah shot at her.
Jack burst out laughing at Delilah’s quip. “Maybe you could have just asked for that in the first place, instead of going behind both our backs. Who knows, I might have said yes. You know, back before we all hated each other.”
Suddenly, Delilah smiled as a thought crossed her mind. “You know? That’s not such a bad idea. Jack, since it appears your date isn’t coming tonight, what do you say you and I head back to my place for a little three-way… minus one!”
“Wait… SERIOUSLY?”
“Sure, why not?” said Delilah. She leaned in toward Jack, pausing only long enough to judge his reaction, and when he seemed willing, she planted a kiss right on his mouth. As she broke away, she shot a scornful look at Amy.
“Maybe this date wasn’t a disaster after all,” Jack mused aloud, smiling, then looked back to Amy. “Whatever your surprise was, you can enjoy it by yourself. Looks like we’re busy tonight.”
Jack took Delilah by the hand, and they walked away. Well, that had not gone according to plan. Amy had seriously overestimated their hatred of each other. Maybe it wasn’t so much each other they hated, as the bitter memories the sight of the other brought up. She had accidentally turned two enemies into friends by presenting herself as a greater enemy.
But this presented a new opportunity. Maybe her plans weren’t ruined, just altered. Now that she knew what they would be doing for the rest of the night, maybe she could cast a delayed spell on them, something to give them a little surprise right when things were starting to get good.
Just before Jack and Delilah disappeared out the door, she drew the rod out of her bag and pointed it at their backs.
What should Amy's wish be?
