Claim one bed and wait to see if one or both want to share it with you

John flopped himself down on the nearer of the two beds, keeping to one side of it just in case anyone might want the other side.

Ilyana eyed the remaining bed skeptically. "Hmm. Is there really enough room for both of us on one of these, Kate?"

Kate emerged from the bathroom and optimistically declared that there was, but an experimental evaluation of her hypothesis resulted in Ilyana crashing to the floor and Kate apologizing profusely.

"This isn't going to work," concluded Ilyana. "You know, Allison and Chloe have a queen bed in their room that I'm sure would fit three. I'll just room with them tonight." She grabbed her bag and opened the door to go.

Pained at the prospect of losing 50% of his fair company, John rose in protest. "No don't do that. I'll just sleep on the floor or something."

"I should be the one to go," Kate objected, "This was my idea."

Several more rounds of debate ensued, but all conversation abruptly ceased when Coach Vanessa materialized unexpectedly in the hall like a ghostly apparition fortelling doom.

"John? What are you doing in here with all your stuff? Don't you have your own room?" she asked suspiciously.

The three of them stumbled and stammered for an answer but with Kate and Ilyana already flustered the truth came out quickly. True to Kate's prediction, Vanessa "freaked". She declared in no uncertain terms that the board of education would have her throat if they knew anything remotely like this was taking place under her watchful supervision, and that the only responsible solution was to shuttle John directly back to the airport and onto the next flight home, which is exactly what she did.
