Chapter 7
by Shandy
Check out the barn or stay in the car?
Check out the barn
"Sure, why not?" you say. "Let's go take a look." You start the car and pull it closer to the barn door so you don't have to run too far in the rain. Shutting the engine off you look over at Jack and grin. "Ready to run?" you ask, popping open the door and scampering through the rain into the barn. You hear his footsteps behind you squelching in the mud.
The barn is dark, although light coming in through some missing boards shows you that it's being used for hay storage. There are stacks of bales piled high, and the aroma of the hay fills your nostrils. Jack stands beside you, looking around.
"It's not in as bad shape as it looks," he says. "The roof is actually pretty much intact." You follow him as he walks further into the barn, both of you looking about with curiosity. The stacks of hay must be serving as a kind of insulation, because the barn isn't as chilly as you expected it would be. Now that your eyes are getting used to the dim light you can see various bits of abandoned equipment hanging from posts or scattered on the floor.
Suddenly, something moves near your feet and with a frightened squeak you jump closer to Jack. He grabs you, holding you tight, and you see a mouse scamper away into cover. You giggle with relief and embarrassment.
"Just a mouse," Jack says, giving you a little squeeze. His arms feel strong, and though he's a little damp you can feel his warmth against you. "You ok?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. It just startled me, that's all." He gives you a pat and releases you, chuckling as he looks around, then looks back at you. You see the appraisal in his eyes.
"This makes me think of those corny old farmer's daughter stories," he laughs. "You're even dressed for the part, with the plaid shirt and the tiny little shorts. Got that whole Daisy Duke thing kind of going on."
You blush a bit at his words, but smile at the compliment. "So if I'm the farmer's daughter, what does that make you? The big city travelling salesmen who has to sleep in the barn?"
"Something like that. You sneak out to hear my stories of travelling around, tell you stories of the big city." He laughs, his eyes still appraising you. You feel warmth growing in you, enjoying the teasing and flirting.
Keep flirting? Or get more serious? What ideas does Jack have?
