Character source material

The following are characters in this story that appear in Dashiell Hammett's short stories and novels. Most, though not all are from the Continental Op series of stories. Below are listed the characters, and the stories in which they appear. Characters not on this list (except for the narrator/protagonist) are the creation of the author.

The Narrator

Mickey Linehan - Another operative with the Continental Detective Agency. Appears in numerous stories.

The Old Man - Manages the San Francisco office of the Continental Detective Agency. Never named. Appears in numerous stories.

Detective Sergeant O'Gar - San Francisco police detective. Appears in several stories.

Creda Dexter - A young woman, the estranged partner of a conman, whose own ethics don't bear much scrutiny. Appears in "The Tenth Clew."

Miss Wonderly - A young woman, much more that what she seems. Appears in "The Maltese Falcon."
