Chapter 2 : A Dark Night Passing

Unable to sleep , and beginning to grow sick of the stench of your own urine , you shakily zipped down your tent zipper, once more peering your head out, your eyes darting in every direction for fear of the thing's possible return, before you stepped out of your tent. You needn't even stretch, your body was wide awake and still shot full of adrenaline, as you stepped closer to the edge of the camp site where the monster feasted on the contents of your food bag , the pleasant sound of the morning birds chirping , radiant yellow sun light and the whistling of the gentle breeze as it rustled the leaves in the trees high above your head, almost betraying the horrific sight you saw lurking in the nearby bushes the night before. You picked up the large bag , it looked as if it had been sliced open from the bottom by three jagged claws, surrounding it, torn bits of food , such as jerky , bread and granola , the plastic in which they were contained and what can only be described as an obscene amount of saliva, instantly causing you to recoil and release the bag unto the grounds. The edge you felt from the encounter , was only exacerbated by your lack of sleep and paranoia you had experienced since your arrival. You had enough of this place, you and your mother were going to leave as soon as she awoke.

You began to pack up your things, gathering all your supplies in the center of the camp , before changing your clothes , and using the remaining water , in the plastic bottles that survived the night, to rinse yourself of the pungent aroma of urine. You then moved unto beginning , disassembling your tent , during the process of which you were interrupted by the sound of your mother.

" Mmmmmmh........Jason. What are you doing young man ? Were not leaving until tomorrow." She said quizzically , her voice softer and still groggy from having just risen from her slumber, as she clasped both her hands together and raised them far above her head in an attempt to stretch and get her body up to speed.

" Oh !" she said peering at the mess of the bag the beast left.

" Well I guess that puts a damper on our plans. We might as well skip ahead. Head into town today, restock our supplies and then hike back up and finish the vacation here." Your mom stated matter of factly , her strategic and business minded , mind having already plotted three steps ahead in case of any disturbances on your little get away.

You simply nodded in response , just wanting to get back to civilization. As for convincing her not to return , you would cross that bridge when you got into town and away from here . Maybe you'd fane illness , that seemed to work on her from time to time , when you just didn't want to go to school.

" Hmph. Well I guess since your already have everything packed up. I'll take a bath before we make the hike down and grab a bite to eat in town." Your mom uttered , clearly a bit upset by your quiet ambience and strange behavior.

" No !" You called out , a bit more loudly than you had intended, causing your mom to jump a little going wide eyed , before narrowing her vision on you , awaiting expectantly, a reason for your disturbance.

" It's Just ..... Well ......You're gonna hike back down and get sweaty again , so it makes no sense right ." You muttered sheepishly , tripping over your words as you stumbled for a reason to convince her not to go. Fearful that whatever you saw may still be lurking in edges of the camp waiting for an opportunity to pounce.

" Hmmm . I guess your right. Just don't ever take that tone again with me young man ." You could feel it growing closer , becoming more hateful and now even hungry as you neared the end of your journey , though as you focused in on the wretched stimulus even further you noticed it wasn't so much staring at you than it was through you , its malicious , feral , hungry gaze gawking directly at your mother, whos walked before you. Spurring you even faster down the dirt pathway. At a labored walking pace , you both took about what felt like an hour of a half to near the end of the trail, your mind swimming with relief as you came down the final mountain bend and saw the old man's reception booth.

You didn't even stop to say goodbye , continuing your brisk march to the car, the only thought on your mind , 'getting the fuck out of dodge' . Continuing along the small path that lead to the parking lot , you began to feel like an escaped prisoner who just got his lucky break , happy that the feeling of being watched was no longer of concern , and that you could return to the safety of civilization . However, unfortunately for you fate is often a cruel mistress.

Your heart sank faster than a cement block being thrown into the ocean , as you dropped the bags you were carrying and fell to your knees, your mouth agape. The cause of your anguish , being the site of your mother's car, it was utterly trashed. All four tires had been torn to shreds , so badly that you could see the rims on which they were attached. The gas tank had all its contents leaked unto the ground where it stood parked , and the hood of the engine crumpled like a piece of paper inwards. Calling it a wreck wouldn't do it justice. You felt swallowed by fear , panic and grief all at once , your vision darkening , as you withdrew internally into your mind. There was no getting away from this place now , the forest that surrounded here, stretched for miles along the roads. You recall not seeing an ounce of civilization for at least the next 10 miles , so there was no way you were walking , and with iffy phone reception , no way to call for help . You were utterly paralyzed , being shaken out of your catatonic state only slightly by your mother yelling in frustration.

" OH ! What the hell !" She screeched furiously as she came upon her beloved vehicle smashed to bits , before spinning straight around and marching back to the booth where the old man sat, her fat ass bouncing , and quivering delectably from side to side , smashing into each other indecently creating a sickeningly perverse clapping sound.

You barely could register the conversation as you knelt frozen where you were , still unable to process the overwhelming feeling of dread you were experiencing. The tid bits you could hear over your mom's yelling , and the near deafening sound of silence that emanated from the forest , serving to get you more or less up to speed at what happened to your car and when help would be coming. The old man made mention firstly in regards to the car , that this is bear country and that it may have been scavenging for food or mistook the vehicle for a rival. But you knew that was bullshit , the claw marks that dug into the tires were too deep and perfectly matched the three jagged claws you saw on your food bag an hour or two earlier, and there was no way in hell a bear could generate the amount of **** it took to crumple the engine and gas tank. It had to be that thing you saw last night , further adding to the evidence that it was no dream.

The second bit of news in contrast was a bit more up lifting if only slightly. The old man mentioned that he usually gets a delivery of supplies and equipment about every three days that hold him over until the next delivery and that the truck that makes it's rounds here , would be arriving tomorrow, so you both could have caught a ride with them. Even though it meant help was on the way , you still felt stuck , isolated and fearful. It was almost as if the forest itself was a predator , out to get you and now you were **** to camp another night in reach of its jaws.

You spent much of the rest of the day pacing back and forth in fear and anxiety dreading night's sinister arrival. Your mother on the other hand looked visibly upset and livid , firstly you imagine , because her plans were ruined and secondly due to the fact her vehicle had been totaled , leaving you both stranded, it was all in the lines in her face , so for much of the day as well, you kept clear for fear of her fury. Instead choosing to chat up the blind old man for company and to put your mind at ease. Just as with your dealings with him at the beginning of the trip , he was friendly and forthcoming , relaying many of the stories of the oldened days of the park and his own thrilling adventures here as well. You can't remember when but somewhere along the discussion you had brought up the cases in which intrepid hikers , have claimed to lay witness to the same beast you had. The old man chuckled a bit , before becoming deafly silent for a few seconds.

" Long .....Tale that one sonny. Long tale indeed. Goes back as far as the native Indian days. Back then , they even had a name for em." The old man mirthed , his tone taking a complete one eighty and becoming serious and dry.

You simply continued to gaze at him in anticipation.

An attempt that did little to quell your heightened agitation from fear , and a lack of sleep. You know what you saw , and were terrified that you had to spend another night here. Even though you both were down the mountain , you were quite possibly still in that beast's territory , and the hateful stare it gave you , was enough indication that you weren't welcome here. However what seemed to set you on edge even more wasn't the stares you were receiving , but the one's your admittedly oblivious mother was . In comparison to yours , from what you could tell they felt fueled more by hunger , a lusting almost a need for , sending lighting darting across your back as you thought more about it. Still you could do nothing but pray you weren't followed , and that the night here would speed past you like it was just a brief moment.

As the sun's radiant comforting light began to dwindle , your mom ordered you to begin setting up the tents and gathering fire wood , while she scrounged up what remained of your supplies to make supper. Having done so the dark ,eerie night soon set upon you , after eating dinner , the two of you lounged casually around the fire you made, your mother reading a book she had brought and you ever vigilant of whatever lurked in the dark. Your eyes dancing all around the campsite. You had made decision again not to sleep that night, at least until you were on your way out of here, you heart still in a survival response. You were in this trance of surveying the campsite from top to bottom for what felt like an hour or two , with bed time soon approaching , the night seemed rather uneventful , alarmingly so. The forest seemed normal as well , the cricketing of well crickets , croaking of frogs , tweeting of what sounded like bats , and gentle rush of breeze, it was alive for certain but not in anyway that seemed out to get you. It was almost lulling you to sleep in a sense , you were already exhausted after all , and soon you found yourself in and out of consciousness.

That was until the forest grew to a deafening silence , the animals , the wind, the rustling leaves , it was as if everything had died at once , leaving only a heavy suffocating , dark foreboding atmosphere . Your mother didn't seemed to notice and kept reading her book , her thick long shapely legs crossed over one another , causing her thick thighs to squish together. After a few moments , you caught the unmistakable glare of its penetrating red eyes , staring at you from a bush at the out skirts of the parking lot. Fear , dismay , panic and now anger all bubbled inside you and were now ready to burst out all at once.

" Who's there !? " You cried out trying your best to hide your terror and the shakiness in your voice , alerting your mother from her gentle reading and causing her to look at you with curiosity at your outburst.

You were focused however on those menacing red eyes , and were unprepared for what you saw next.

You heart sank , witnessing it slowly emerge from the bush it hid in , aggravated at your yelling , its jaunt crooked , it's steps slow , and cat like , but predatory and intimidating. Slowly creeping towards both you and your increasingly alert mother , the dim illumination of the fire surrounding the area revealing more of its twisted beastial features. It was tall and naked , standing a few inches above you , lanky , its skin patchy , hairless , thick and colored a sickly grey , its body thin , but it's muscles well defined, it's shape mostly humanoid , save for its hands and face. The hands , were more like claws , long sharp and about twice the width of its forearm , having three jagged digits , that were possibly used for hunting, it's face was thin and sharp , its jaw pointed and its head rounded and bald , its eyes were like small slits that glowed a devilish red , its' ears pointed and long, face lacking a nose only hollow black nostrils.

Your mother shot bolt upright from her chair and shrieked in horror as the creature menaced closer towards you , now frozen in fear. This wail seemed to stop it dead in it's tracks , the beast's face twisted in anger before it snarled and released it's own shrill ear piercing shriek that seemed to shake you and your mom's very being. In return about a dozen or more shrieks of the same type were posed back to the monster , before you saw a couple dozen more glowing eyes begin to surround both of you , staring into your very souls. Then just like before several of the same monster's kin emerged from the bushes encircling you on all sides, standing just a couple of feet away from you all. You were scared shitless at this point , your mind drew blanks as you attempted to comprehend the magnitude of danger you were in , trapped on all sides and unable to escape, you could almost feel yourself begin to **** on your own hurricane of emotions.

Amidst your terror induced nightmare , something strange occurred, the monsters had stop approaching you, instead they simply huddled and blocked your means of escape , hissing and snarling occasional at you and cooing at your mom , as if they were waiting for something. Then they all went quiet , as you begun to hear thundering footsteps in the distance , the same pair of glowing red eyes making its way from the shadows , with each domineering trot. This continued until the creature like all others was illuminated fully, by the dimming fire , revealing another beast , but this time slightly different. Compared to the others this one stood nearly a feet taller than yourself , it's figure muscular and broad , unlike the rest of it's ilk , its face worn and scarred , possessing a thick streak of white hair that ran across the top its scalp giving it a mohawk. What alarmed you the most about this new addition of monstrosity , was the thing hanging between its legs , or rather shooting straight up and out at this point. That upon closer inspection you now recognized as its penis.

For all intents and purposes it looked remarkably human , aside from the grey tone of flesh that covered it with slight discrepancies here and there.
