As the Quasar left Federation space Janeway briefed her crew on their mission. They were under orders to accelerate to high warp to reach the border of Federation space and the Cestus system. Currently under Gorn control the Federation wanted to reestablish a colony and start mining on Cestus V. As the crew reached the system two Gorn ships approached on an intercept course. Kira after hearing Janeway's plan as they proceeded to depart convinced her to not go on the mission despite its dangers. After informing them of the mission they crammed into an escape pod and jettisoned from the ship toward the Gorn.
