Catch your wife Mary with one of her boy toys: Chuck, your church pastor.

You let Mary drag you along to church, because, well, it had been a while, and until your leg is better you won't be on the road, so you might as well be sociable.

After the service, you're chatting with Nadine, the organist, who is at the big bowling ball stage of her pregnancy. Marriage to the minister, an energetic fellow a little younger than Nadine herself, has been good for her. The mousy woman who could barely speak except through her organ playing has blossomed into a sociable lady, and here she is talking with you on a sunny bench outside the church.

"It's so generous of you, Brian," Nadine says. "Having Mary do her thing for my husband again."

It had slipped your mind, but not that long ago, Mary had been part of the church's informal Straight and Narrow Committee, a little group of mature and sensible ladies who stepped up to share the job of lifting their skirts for Chuck, the horny young youth pastor, to keep him out of trouble. The Straight and Narrow Committee had wound up their duties after fixing up Chuck with Nadine, to the bride's great and evident satisfaction. And Chuck had succeeded to the pastor's job not long ago.

"Of course," you say. "Mary was telling me Chuck needs a little help in that department again."

Nadine laughs. "Yes, we were both surprised that me on my way to being a mommy was such a, oh, let me say it, a pecker-lifter for Chuck. I've been appreciating it, but there's only so much of me, and it seems like Chuck's always hard these days."

"At least they didn't have to get the whole committee back together," you say. "Just Mary."

"Just Mary," Nadine echoes. "Your wife is a very special angel, Brian."

"Come to think of it, where is Mary?" you say. You and Nadine have been chatting for a while. "Do you think?"

"Do you mean to ask, where are Mary and Chuck?" Nadine says. She pretends to hide a grin behind her hands. "Help me up, Brian."

You steady yourself on the back of the bench and help bowling-ball-belly Nadine to stand up.

"Oh I'm so sorry!" Nadine says. "I forgot you, ah. Your leg?"

You laugh. "Mary told you the story, so I don't have to repeat it in church. And it's all right, we can lean on each other."

Nadine grins. "You're a noble fella, Brian," she says, adding a wink. "Throwing yourself in front of that hard, hard floor." She hands you your cane. "I hope you're not too restless, being off the road for a bit."

"Not too, not too."

"Okay now," Nadine says. She lowers her voice. "I bet I know where they are. Follow me, but be very quiet." She touches a finger to her lips.

You follow Nadine, trying not to make any thumps with your feet or your cane.
