Car Ride Home

The car ride home was awkward as hell. Even with the embarrassing situation we fled from, I think we were both still thinking about the conversation we had. It was going to take some time for both of us to digest, me especially.

After twenty-odd minutes, Kaylee pulled up into my driveway. I glanced over at her as she put it in park.

“Thanks for last night,” she said. “It may not seem like it, but I really enjoyed it.”

“I did too.”

Her smile turned uncomfortable as she shifted in her seat. I had been about to leave, but it looked like she wanted to say something. Curious, I waited until she managed to work up the courage to say it. “Scott?” she asked, not meeting me in the eye. She brushed hair behind her ear.

“Yeah?”

“You know when I said I didn’t mind you sleeping with other girls?”

I frowned. I had to think back, but I vaguely remembered her saying something like that. It didn’t matter much to me since I wasn’t interested in the slightest of taking advantage of that.

“Not my mom,” she said quietly, not meeting my gaze. Speechless, I opened my mouth for only silence to answer her. “She’s the only one you absolutely can’t sleep with.”

“Kaylee I—”

“Promise me.” When I tried to say something, she interrupted. “Promise me you’ll never sleep with her.” The intensity she looked at me made me feel there was a story there. I wasn’t sure I wanted to know what was there. The only thing that was important was that it was important to Kaylee. It was an easy promise to make too. Kaylee’s mom may have been attractive in her own seductive way, but she terrified me more than anything.

“I promise.”

She let out a long breath. “Sorry, it’s just—” She shook her head. “It’s not important, just keep that promise.” She smiled. “If you don’t, I will dump your ass in a heartbeat.”

With that, she leaned over and kissed me. “Get out,” she said with a laugh. “As much as I enjoy hanging out with you, I have homework and studying to do.”
