In order to accomplish their mission, the Ancient Race had to build the NanoBots with intelligence. While in proximity to each other, the microscopic robots were able to communicate with what can only be described as telepathic signal.

After eons of billions of NanoBots being confined to the limited space of the payload compartment of the probe, they had developed a hive mind and worked together to accomplish the mission. Armed with information they gained from space probe Voyager, and then additional information received in transmissions from Earth, they understood that their primary target was the humans.

Their anatomy and genetic composition were ideally suited to be modified to carry the offspring. The gestation period would be brief. Just days. The offspring would be downloaded with the complete culture and history of the Ancient Race. They would mature quickly and be able to take charge of the colonization in a matter of weeks.

The Nanos hoped that they wouldn't be relegated to a lesser role after that. During the eons, they had become sentient. Their wish, after the Ancient Race became self sufficient was to develop a symbiosis with the humans and perhaps share this planet with the Ancients.
