Chapter 4
by D!$N3Y
What's next?
Breakfast
George knew he didn't have any powers, but he felt super, anyway. Optimistic. He could still remember the day his folks told him that they both had superpowers: mom could control all forms of positivity, and uses them to help people recover and grow stronger, whereas his dad can mimic and copy powers of other heroes and villains. It never lasted so long before, but he learned a technique that helped call on a power he used previously.
George even asked if he would get superpowers like his folks, but while they warned that there was a high chance that George would never get powers, he can't lose hope. "You never know," Jackson encouraged. "Someday, you may just surprise us all." Ever since then, George has been wishing to get powers, but nothing happened. 'Yet,' he thought.
George and Jack sat at the kitchen table, watching Mira work her culinary magic at the stove. Then Jack turned to his son and said with a smile, "So. My boy is on his way to Sky High. Your mom and I are so proud of you."
"Thanks, dad." Even though it felt like an honor to go to a super school, he didn't recognize the honor. It actually felt as if a plate of jello was trembling in his stomach; he was nervous.
His expression of staring at the floor did not go unnoticed by his pop. "George. What's up?" When his son didn't answer him the first time, Jack furrowed his brow a bit and called to him again. "George..."
"Huh?" That seemed to get the would-be hero's attention.
"You ok, slugger?" Jack asked. Mira came with breakfast for the men, as she too was curious.
"Yeah. Yeah, I-I'm okay, Dad."
"It's okay to be nervous about going to a new school, George." His mother tried to quell his anxieties, reassuring his decision. "I bet most kids do, if not every one." Mira's kind words did little to comfort her son as he scarfed down his breakfast. Jack stopped eating and actually took the plate away, which brought George out of his head for him to take the plate back.
"Wha' goofs?" he demanded with a mouthful of food.
"What gives is that you're gonna **** if you eat that fast," Jack said sternly. He relaxed his face, taking a deep breath, and continued in a calmer tone. "Look. Sky High is gonna be great, when you get into the swing of it." George chewed his food slower before swallowing during his dad's little speech. "You'll make friends, learn how to be the person you've always wanted to be. Whether a hero or a villain."
"But your father and I would prefer you minor in villainy," Mira chuckled awkwardly, "just to understand their thinking." George smiled, nodding that his folks would want him to be the kind of hero he wants to be. All of a sudden, the doorbell rang.
"I'll get it," Jack informed, riding out of his chair to answer the door.
Who can that be?
