Before they can make a decision, Zelda comes through the portal, turning into a wolf and closing it behind her.

As the two wolves silently pondered the prospect in front of them, the chance to return to their world, and possibly their original forms, the choice was taken away from them. They watched, stunned, as a young woman with brown hair and wearing an elegant dress walked into the portal before they could, entering the Twilight Realm. As she did, they watched as her form twisted and changed, shrinking into the four-legged canine body they themselves had been cursed with. A coat of thick light brown fur grew from her skin, while at the same time her beautiful face elongated into the muzzle of a wolf.

The portal, and the light that came from it, disappeared, leaving behind a third wolf, one now swimming in the clothes she had previously been wearing. As she finally escaped them, fear in her eyes, Link and Midna knew for a fact she was Princess Zelda, and Zelda could see her two friends in the forms of wolves. For a brief moment, Link felt his heart sink. This had felt like his last chance of going home, of being Hylian, and it had been taken from him. Was he to spend the rest of his life as a beast?

Then the scent of the newly minted wolf hit Link’s canine nostrils, and he could smell her confusion, her fear...but also some curiosity mixed in with all of it. Perhaps Link needed to switch his thinking around. This wasn’t a curse, something to be endured. He hadn’t lost his last chance for salvation. No, he’d lost his last temptation towards a dull life. Being a Hylian, the more he thought about it, was really nothing compared to the world of a wolf. The smells, the sounds, the sex...why go back? Why not take charge of these two beautiful creatures and start his own pack, his own family?

To Link’s surprise, Midna was pretty much immediately okay with the idea. Over the last few years she’d grown bored with ruling, with other looking to her for guidance. For several hours now Midna had looked at this wolfy change as a vacation from being ruler of the Twili, but perhaps switching careers entirely wouldn’t be bad either. Plus, she liked seeing the normally quiet and meek Link take charge, it was hot.

Of course, Zelda was not exactly privy to this conversation, not being well-versed in wolf speak yet, and they both knew she’d need convincing. They took it slow, showing her around the forest and letting her run loose, hunt, be free. It wasn’t until she was tired that they started putting the moves on her, and despite some whines of protest at first, Zelda joined into the wolf threesome fairly easily. They soon became the only free wolf pack in the Twilight Realm, and after several litters of puppies, their family grew into a powerful group that ruled the forests, and soon more of the Twili wildlands. But that is a story for another day.
