Chapter 8
by Felix715
To the athletics building?
Athletics building offices.
Arthur leads Iris out a back door of the school building outside to the large activities area. There are fields for football, or soccer as the Americans liked to call it, track, and many more. The athletics building, closer to the lake, is smaller than the school itself but still an impressive size. A pair of small docks jutting out into the lake have a few crew boats for a rowing team and a couple of daysailors tethered. Large groups of students roam the area playing small matches or otherwise training for the upcoming year.
"Is it always so busy around here?" Iris asks almost to herself.
"Usually more so. Over there. We have our own driving range. We travel off-campus for actual games." Arthur says pointing off to the right.
"Oh.." Iris responds as the two approach the modern athletics building, it looks brand new. It was either just built or recently renovated. The first floor almost all glass, allowing the sun to shine in flooding the building with natural light. Arthur leads the way, holding the door open for Iris. "Thank you."
Arthur simply nods proudly of himself before once again taking her arm. "Coach Pearson's office is upstairs." He informs her, leading the way once again.
They take the stairs and down a hall to an unassuming office. Inside a rough but fit-looking man with a thick graying mustache looks up at them. "Arthur." He greets the boy with a gruff voice. Setting his pen down to lean back in his chair.
"Hello, Coach." Arthur starts. "This is a long time family friend, Iris. It's her first year at the school and she is interested in switching from athletics to golf."
Coach Pearson looks Iris up and down, his eyes moving over her body. "Hhmmm... Have you ever played before?"
Iris is a bit nervous. Getting into this class would afford her extra time with Arthur and give her more than an excuse to hang out with him. "No, sir. But I'm eager to learn." She tries to sound enthusiastic.
"I already promised to show her the basics. In our spare time of course." Arthur adds.
Coach Pearson shoots a quick glance to the boy, then back to Iris. He raises an eyebrow and smirks at the pair standing in his office. "Ok. I'll approve it. The class is far from full anyway. But I expect you to give her lessons to bring her up to speed. Even if your interests... shift later." The gruff man tells the pair. Iris confused by that last bit.
"Yes, sir. Thank you, sir." Arthur says.
"Here, give me your schedule." The coach instructs Iris. She hands him the card and he writes in golf and signs his name to it. "Take that back to the office before the end of the week and they will work out the logistics." He turns to Arthur "I suggest you take her out to the driving range and give her the basics."
Arthur nods and the pair leave the coach's office to head back to the first floor of the athletics building. "I don't take it you have some clubs hidden up that skirt of yours, do you?" Arthur jests.
"No..." Iris sarcastically answers, giving the boy a flat stare.
"There is an equipment closet up ahead. We can grab a set there but you will probably want to get your own." He informs her.
Iris wonders how she could come up with the money for a set of her own and if this was a mistake. Maybe there was a better way to get close to Arthur.
