Ask him what race he is
"I am new to the area...and I don't want to be rude, but what race are you?" you try to be as polite as possible, considering how bad your question is.
"I am a Xilth, girl. Check it out at the G.I. if you want, but it is nothing special.
"Now excuse me, I have work to do."
