Chapter 85 by Indirect

What do you do?

Ask her

"Yes, sort of. Could you come in and close the door?"

She does, then she skips over toward you like a joyful schoolgirl and gives you a hug. You enjoy the fuzzy warmth radiating from her, the feeling of that thin tail of hers lazily slapping against your upper thigh and wrapping itself as much as possible around your ass. It's hard not to enjoy Sandra's company. Inside your head you come to a decision. The best way is to trust Sandra and ask her outright.

You lift her into your arms, which gets a pleased purr, and then sit back down in front of the writing desk. "Sandra, I've noticed something strange happening over the last couple of weeks. It may have been going on even longer, but it's worrying me. A strange magical effect that crops up sometimes."

"Okay," she says. "Is something down here misbehaving? I thought you said this vault was protecting us from that kind of thing."

"Yes, but I don't think it's down here. I think it's somehow related to you."

That makes her ears perk up, but pure confusion is etched into her expression. "I can't do magic," she says.

"I know. I can't explain it fully, but all the incidents seem to have been triggered by your desires. It feels almost like a magical wind, sweeping over everything."

"That sounds less like magic and more like a genie from a story," she says. "What incidents?"

"When we were seeing off the inquisitors Melona noticed it. You had just said something about the catgirls going with the inquisitors to me. Melona came over afterward and asked if I felt anything odd. I don't know what that particular incident did - maybe it failed, somehow? But it was the first time I noticed. And the fact that Melona noticed it too proves it can't all be in my head."

Sandra nods, ears perked up, waiting for more.

"Let's see. Chronologically the next time was when you were trying to convince lady Emira to provide some of her eggs so Aleksandra, Skye and Nyerra could carry her babies. Once again, that little trickle of power seemed to flow through the air and then lady Emira was on board with the idea, planning out who should get what features and how many babies each should carry."

Sandra's brow furrows and she says, "Yeah, I remember that. But I thought that was just really lucky."

"And when I actually combined their eggs I gave those girls five, three and three babies, just as lady Emira asked. But then you commented that '13 is a lucky number for Bast' and suddenly one of Nyerra's eggs split and then split again."

"Yes..."

"Then when we transformed the family, Tanya and her two children. I was coming back downstairs and I heard you talking with lady Emira - you were encouraging Tanya to carry more than twins so her new sister would want to catch up. Then there was that feeling and the next time I checked her Tanya was stuffed with quintuplets."

"Huh..." Sandra says. "Well it does sound like I'm involved..."

"There's more - when Sendrey showed interest in Patrick, you whispered something to me about them getting together and almost immediately she was hugging him."

"I..." she says, sounding confused. She doesn't believe in this many coincidences either.

"Last but not least, when Yvonne and Kyelle made some babies together you said you wanted Yvonne to have too many eggs rather than too few. Almost instantly her two eggs split once each, giving her identical quadruplets."

Sandra looks totally stumped. Finally she says, "Wow. It sure looks like it's me." She wriggles around on your lap, all anxious energy. "But I'm not doing this! I wouldn't use magic on you like that."

"All I can think of is that it's some set of artifacts doing it. But you'd have to be wearing them."

Sandra gestures at her nearly naked body and says, "Well if that's it we can certainly find out quickly." She takes off a little opal and gold necklace Lessia gave her to wear, a little gold anklet she found somewhere else and a little gold ring with a sapphire you gave her. All of them go on the desk. A quick check and you don't sense magic from any of them.

"Lessia said the necklace was from her great grandmother," says Sandra. "So maybe its been in the royal family a long time? Maybe it's secretly magic?"

You start scanning the necklace more thoroughly, but no. The big, square black opal and the gold surrounding it are not magical in any way. Just very pretty.

Then Sandra says, "Oh, I suppose if we should check everything..." and she reaches back into her hair and pulls out a pair of solid onyx pegs. Then she shakes her head a bit and pulls a small onyx statuette from the hair at the back of her head. When you see it your first thought is, 'Oh, of course, that old thing. I gave that to her.' But there is dissonance in your mind. When she puts it down on the table and her fingers leave the statue... suddenly it goes from uninteresting, unimportant and non-magical to being almost blinding.

The little onyx statuette is by far the most magical object in the room. Now that the 'uninteresting' glamour has worn off you recognize the amazing, detailed craftsmanship that went into this. The little statuette has a pair of amber gems for eyes, a little fang of white stone poking from its mouth and a tail that wraps down one of its legs. Somehow, somewhere, Sandra found a catgirl statuette.

You look up at Sandra and she looks to be as confused as you are. "But... you gave her to me. Didn't you?"

What is going on?
