Ask Kate for help

He walked nervously back over to Kate, wondering what she would say.

"Uh, Kate?" he prompted.

"Yeah? What's up?"

"I have a serious problem," he admitted. Cheerlessly he explained the situation. "I'm not sure what to do," he finished lamely.

Kate sighed, exasperated. "How could you not have known you needed to reserve your own room? It was right in the permission slip you and your parents signed."

John shrugged helplessly. "Who reads those things?? Can't I maybe room with you?"

She frowned nervously, "I dunno... We better clear it with Coach first. I could get kicked off the team otherwise."

He knew what the answer would be before they even tried. Coach Vanessa was not in the mood to make any concessions---particularly concessions that might cost her her job. She declared that the only reasonable decision was to shuttle John directly back to the airport and put him on the next flight home, which is exactly what she did.

Later in life, John often looked back on his brief island adventure and wondered what might have been. Maybe if he had cultivated a deeper relationship with Kate and the other girls prior to the trip, they would have responded with more alacrity to his plight. It's amazing how seemingly trivial events in one's life can lead to a chain of circumstances that radically affects the outcome.
