Chapter 3

What caught his eye?
Arin (the Boss)
Was that... actually Arin? David didn't peg her for the type. She seemed to be to busy for that kind of thing. She was, after all, the director of the program he was in. In spite of that, there stood the listing on the OF list. Arin Stellis, 32, F, solo. Special requirements: Absolute Secrecy. Beside the rest of the listing, a picture of her face, serious as ever, stood out from the other pictures above and below it. Many of the others were jovial or attempting to look cute. Arin bordered more on imposing and dangerous. If anything, that intrigued rather than discouraged him. The mystery of it all interested him as well. Why might she need absolute secrecy? It was enough to make him want to take the job. He marked the listing and called for Eliza.
She came around shortly after. "What's up, newbie?" "Call me David, please." said David. "Well, technically, I'm supposed to call you by your last name. Company policy and all. But I don't really follow all of the rules." she said. "Appreciate it," David said, "Oh, and I've got something for you." "Ooh! Taking your first job already. Let's see it..." she began, her tablet receiving the details from his. "Oh my. Going for the boss on your very first trip, eh? You're a brave man. I'll have that taken down to the office for you. She should be in contact with you shortly." She began to leave, but then hesitated and said "Don't hurt yourself, tiger. Seriously, you do not wanna know what happened to the last guy that pissed off the bosslady." David hoped dearly that that was a joke.
Just then, David had an idea. He made a decision to walk back down to the common room. He went to the desk on what was now the right side of the room and greeted the tall raven-haired woman stationed behind it. "Hi." he said, "I'd like to buy a few things. I'm not sure how much they'll cost but a few could possibly be cut. I've prepared a list." "You the newbie, then?" she crooned, her drawl thick and dripping off of every word. Her nametag read "Myra." "That I am, Myra. The name's David. Or Thomas, I suppose, considering 'company policy'." She raised an eyebrow at him. "You've gotten your newcomer things from Miss Honeywell, then? Allow me to take a look at your account." she returned. "Hm... well, you won't be able to get everything from the list, but given the contents I've a good idea of what you need. I've marked the following as what I think are necessary for your plans. It leaves you a little extra for a few of the optional items." She handed the list back to him. He looked over the ones she marked, and found he acquiesced to her assessment. He marked two of the optional items, then returned the list to her once more. Lorna looked it over, then went through a "Staff Only" door behind the counter. After a few minutes, she returned with the items on he asked for. She slid them deftly over the counter. "That's quite the array you've bought for day one. I do hope all that effort works out for you." she gave him a wink. "Who's the lucky lady?" "A gentleman never kisses and tells." he thanked her and was on his way, returning once again to his room. He had work to do.
After some time, David finished his preparations. As it turned out, Arin wasn't even available then. Seconds turned into minutes, and minutes into hours. After several hours ticked by, the tone for the door trilled. Arin Stellis, the one and only, director of the program, walked in, clad in her signature suit, heels clacking sharply on the floor. She shut the door behind her, then twisted the knob to red. What happened next surprised David. Her stern and steeled demeanor instantly withered away. She sighed heavily, and her demeanor softened. She removed her heavy heels, and tossed them aside. She finally turned from the door, and saw the scene beyond. A range of emotions that began with surprise and ended with amusement danced across her face. "Thomas, just what in the hell do you think you're doing?" she demanded. A table sat in the center of the room, set neatly with a simple cloth draped across, and lilies perched in the middle. "What do you mean? Do you not like it?" David asked. "Well... I wouldn't say I hate it, I'm just surprised, is all." she replied, "I can't say I was expecting this."
