Chapter 16 by tailteller

Who wakes up first?

Apparently, she did.

Still somewhat dark, James awoke from a feeling of unease. He turned on his side and checked his clock. Just before 5. He turned off his alarm clock before it could go off, and stretched before checking on Aurora. Panic hit all at once when he found the bathtub empty.

Not bothering to get dressed, he dashed through the house trying to find her. Eventually, he managed to hear some clanging from the garage. He nearly broke the door open in his hurry, finding Aurora startled and flashing orange at him inside. A pile of random metals and old phones, and a couple of old laptops sat in the center along with most of his cookware.

He sighed, smiling with relief. She flickered green, and he reached for the green card. That was when he realized he was naked. Then he realized she was as well. Quickly he covered his shame, only to receive several flickers of white from her. She didn't care, apparently. Chuckling, he left to change and find his cards. When he returned, he found her picking apart the old phones and keeping small pieces in a stainless steel pot.

"What...is all this?"

"Fhun!", she chirped. He smiled. At least that would give her something to do...even if it did mean he'd need new cookware...and from what he could see, a new heating element for his oven, and a new washing machine...and what looked like LED lights, that he would have to find himself where she'd taken them from, and most of his tools. He heard a knock at the door, and went to answer it while holding the blue card to her.

His sister, as he'd expected, had arrived and looked like she'd barely gotten out of bed. He let her in and she went straight for his coffee machine, grumbling, "How do you get up this early? The whole world is still sleeping..."

"Start at 7 with an hour drive, you'll get up early too."

Sally looked to the garage door with far less concern than he would have at another loud noise. James shrugged, "She found a hobby."

"Great, she can have fun...hopefully she'll still learn to talk to us."

"She will. Whatever she's doing, I doubt she'll do it for an entire day."

Sally nodded, finding things to make breakfast, waving away her brother's small comment about her rudeness. When the time came for him to leave, he got Aurora's attention.

"Hey.", he started softly. She glanced at him and smiled. "I have to leave." She looked confused. "I. Go. Engineer." She flickered yellow until he pointed into the house and said, "Sally." That got a green response. At least that was something. When he tried to leave, she chittered at him. He gently tugged her into the house, and gestured at Sally, who waved tiredly. When he went for the door, she grabbed his arm. "Okay look. I. Go. Later, come back." She sucked her lower lip into her mouth. He grabbed a pen and a sticky note, drawing out 4:00 and putting it in front of the clock. "When this. Looks like that. I come back." She tried to follow him. He held up the yellow card when she tried to come out of the house, and she retreated slightly. She still let out a soft, sad sounding trill. He got in his car, and waited to see the door close before sending his sister a text to remember to put on more videos to teach her English.
