An empty street

Scanning the area, you quickly realize that the source of the gunfire is long gone. There is nobody out on the street. Suddenly, something catches your eye. A hole in a window on the building across the street. The hole looks like it was caused by a bullet, likely the gunshot that was reported.

Pulling your grapnel gun from your belt you launch a hook that connects to the building. You swing down onto the fire escape next to the apartment with the broken window. Peering in through the window, you spot a man seated at his table, face down in a plate of food.

Carefully, you push on the cracked glass of the window. It quickly gives way, shattering into the apartment. You climb though the broken window and approach the man. You see a gaping wound in the back of his head, blood is splattered on the table and the floor beneath him. As you lean in for a closer inspection, you feel a gun press against the back of your head. You inwardly curse yourself for forgetting to secure the scene and allowing someone to get the drop on you.

You raise your hands in mock surrender, before grabbing the assailant's wrist and pushing the gun in a direction away from you. As soon as you turn, you are greeted by a red mask. A mocking laugh emanates from behind the mask, as you release his wrist with an annoyed sigh.

"What would Bruce say if he saw you forgot your training, Babs?"

"Shut up, Jason. This is your work?" You point to the dead body at the table.

"No, can't take credit for this."

"Then why are you here?"

"Believe it or not, I was here to talk to him."

"And what, " you question his story, "he happened to trip and fall into a bullet?"

"This man is Johnny Morelli, a low level soldier in Roman Sionis's organization. I came here to ask him a few questions about his boss. As soon as he opens his mouth, his head explodes. I couldn't see where the shot came from, I didn't hear the shot either."

"I'm guessing it was you that reported it then?"

"Yeah, sent the signal straight to the Batcave, I was expecting Bruce, though."

"Bruce is... occupied. I'm in charge right now."

"Really? Well then, I guess we're working together."

"I don't need your help, Jason. I'm going to catch the guy that did this and I'm not letting you kill him."

"Listen, Barbara, I've been working on catching Sionis for months now. He has so many decoys running around Gotham, that he's practically a ghost. The fact that he's having his own men killed means he knows I'm getting close to finding him, the real Black Mask. The truth is, that I don't need YOU. Not the other way around. I'm giving you the chance to work with me because we can catch him faster together. You help me with this and I will hand him over to you, still breathing."

"Alright, Jason, I'll help you take down Sionis. First we should find out who our assassin is."

"You read my mind, Babs."

"Let me radio Tim before we do anything. I need to check how his investigation is going."
