Amy Gets Serious

Amy liked to think of herself as a practical-minded girl.

She was being haunted. By a ghost. Obviously a very powerful ghost, judging by the fact that neither the ghost hunter nor the spirit medium had been able to do anything about it. And the ghost seemed intent on embarrassing her as much as possible.

This was a serious problem. It needed a serious solution.

She didn't know much about ghosts. She'd only found out they existed a few weeks ago. One of the most interesting facts about her current situation was that it offered hard proof of the existence of the supernatural. The problem was that she couldn't share it with anyone. She had no control over where and how the ghost manifested. It just showed up to prank her whenever it pleased. So there was no way to study it. Better to concentrate on how to make it go away.

Calling in the experts hadn't worked. But she wasn't going to give up just yet. She didn't intend to live her whole life at the ghost's mercy. There had to be something she could do. The first step was to figure out exactly what she was dealing with.

She sat down at her desk in her apartment and looked over her notes from the last few weeks.

The ghost seemed to follow her wherever she went. It wasn't confined to her apartment. It was haunting her, not any one specific place.

Its powers seemed wide, and not very well defined. It could throw open curtains, jam doors, make items disappear from locked rooms, move objects around, summon breezes and even somehow arrange for her clothes to be donated to charity. She didn't know its limits.

So far, she hadn't noticed it creating any physical objects. It had only worked with what was already there. It also hadn't manipulated anyone's mind. She hadn't noticed much unusual behaviour from the people around her. Although she hadn't been arrested for public nudity, and she hadn't gotten into any trouble at her job, despite suffering several wardrobe malfuctions in front of her colleagues, and taking quite a lot of time off. So maybe the ghost could somehow ensure that its constant pranks wouldn't seriously affect the balance of her life.

It didn't show up every day. Today was Thursday, and she hadn't seen it since the weekend. Maybe it was giving her a break out of mercy, or maybe it enjoyed keeping her in suspense.

It hadn't pranked anyone else but her. There were plenty of beautiful women in the city, but she was the only one it seemed interested in embarrassing.

Amy chewed the end of her pencil thoughtfully, looking down at what she'd written. It really wasn't much to go on. She needed more information if she was going to try and find out what was going on and how to stop it.
