Chapter 4 by Shibbar Shibbar

Your clanging steps echo loudly.

AB-Hydroponic-entomobattery

This somewhat paradoxically both spacious yet cramped room contains one of the most vital, arguably the most vital, systems on the station- means of food production. Just one of many such rooms on the station, within this room you see thin rows of hydroponic basins, stacked on top of each other, yet each still accessible for harvesting- humorously, no space can be wasted in space. Within the enclosed containers grow vegetables, fruits and herbs, genetically molded after thousands of generations for the optimum yield, with the most nutrients possible, in the quickest amount of time, all without being affected by the lower gravity. Each plant is showered upon with recycled water, enriched with minerals, and shone on with a sun lamp

And since wasting space is frowned upon, the hydroponics double as entomobatteries. Vast amount of crickets, cockroaches and ants live within these basins, they too modified for yield and nutrition, with an added bonus of mutual benefit for the plants. Though perhaps unsightly to some on Earth and other planets used to meat such as chicken, rat or vat-grown flesh, the lack of space means that insects are the only viable source of reliable protein. To most who have spent all their life in space, it's no longer unusual- in fact, many would consider flesh such as beef to be unsightly and disgusting (if one were lucky enough to afford it in the first place).

The insects swarm around, unable to escape their plastic confines. At least this system is still operational. In fact, nothing seems out of the ordinary at all. Whatever happened to the station, care had been takes so that food did not stop being grown and harvested. Curious.

You meet eyes with a cockroach. You find all the insects to be very relatable all of a sudden.
