Chapter 16

What's his answer then?
A visit to the nearby cafe
"I'll try your place then." Jack didn't need to give it much thought before giving his answer, as he figured the school would be cramped with students, while Catherine's cafe couldn't have all that many visitors already this early in the morning. It wasn't like he'd actually avoided contact with the outside world for the last couple of days, but he certainly wasn't looking for it either.
And besides, he hadn't even seen his daughter's work since she started there, even as she'd asked both him and Shirley to come by some time. They always worked the same days though, so there was never any time for a visit while she was there, even if Jack had ever felt up for it. Quite surprisingly she seemed a lot more enthusiastic about it than usual as well, which made him a bit suspicious about her motives, even if she likely just wanted him to get out of the house for a while.
"Well, thanks for the ride dad!" The two younger girls told him as he dropped them off in front of their school, and then they scurried away to try and avoid the worst of the downpour. It wasn't raining quite as much as before, but at least it seemed to be cracking up a bit, and by the time they arrived at Kate's place it had almost stopped entirely.
Still they hurried inside though, and was met by a rather surprised young woman who was obviously working there, considering her uniform clothes and the name tag on her chest. She was cute and friendly, if just a bit on the round side, and Jack could easily tell how she and Kate made a good pair when serving the customers, or at least the male ones.
"Katie...?" Said the girl, who was apparently named Rosalyn according to her tag, and her lively brown eyes darted from one of them to the other while she seemed to be eager for some kind of introduction. Her first assumption was far from what Jack had been expecting however, and he found himself at a lack of words when she turned back to his daughter with a wide-eyed look on her pretty little face. "You never told me you got a boyfriend, Kate!"
"Nah, he's new!" Catherine just laughed in return, which made her father even more perplexed, even as he'd known her for long enough to recognize the mischievous grin and the gleam in her eyes. She didn't bother to explain her joke however, but left her friend to muse on the news while she headed for the counter. "I'll need to get changed, Jack. Just pick a table, and I'll get your breakfast in a minute!"
"Uh, sure..." He finally managed to say something at all, while he found it strange to hear his own name from one of his daughters, as all three of them had always addressed him as nothing but 'Dad'. Even more peculiar was the way which the other young woman regarded him though, and he wondered how Kate would explain it was all just a prank, when her co-worker seemed to have taken it without a shadow of a doubt.
"Oh, wow!" The poor girl was so intrigued that she couldn't even let him out of her sight as he took a seat by the side of the counter, but luckily another customer came by just a few seconds later, which helped to divert her attention for a while. Jack should probably have told her about his daughter's cruel joke otherwise, but with more guests arriving there was never any good time for it.
Eventually Catherine returned to the room as well, and even Jack couldn't keep from staring for a second as she swaggered up to his table and set down a plate in front of him. It wasn't the well decorated sandwiches that caught his attention though, but instead it was his daughter's outfit which turned every pair of eyes in the room towards them. In fact it wasn't much different from what Rosalyn was wearing, but the way her uniform stuck to that slender body like a second skin made all the difference which truly mattered.
In short, if this was how his daughter was dressed every day at work, then it would be a miracle if they didn't have customers queuing out on the street from the moment they opened the doors in the morning. Judging by the look on Rosalyn's face this wasn't quite the case though, and she had obvious problems to keep from giggling while her co-worker pranced in front of her supposed 'boyfriend'...
Jack himself wasn't quite as amused, but decided to keep from saying anything about it with this many people around them. Not that he cared too much about his daughter's reputation, which she was obviously well capable of ruining all by herself, but he certainly didn't want any more attention than he'd already got from her odd little show.
"No, don't mind me!" Said the other girl, when Kate went back to help her by the counter, and Jack didn't need to look at them to know how Rosalyn was pointing her friend back in his own direction. "Just keep him company while he's here...!"
So, what should he do then...?

One man's world has been turned upside down, but he may find hope in the most unexpected places.
A story which I hope to work on when I have the time for it. For now it's closed for others, but I'll gladly accept ideas and suggestions for how to improve or continue the story! I've now started adding conditions, which is how I planned it from the start. So far it's recommended to read without activating the play function, but please try it out if you want, and let me know if you find something odd about the scoring.
